1. Hi MM

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately tired the lot already.

I'm definitely getting a signal from pre to power amp, green light flickering away.
I have found out that I have combi connectors on the cab but standard on the amp, that is probably why it worked with my other amp when it was a jack - jack cable used.

Doing a bit of digging I can see that a 4 pole speakon cable won't mate to a 2 pole connector,

If I have a 4 pole cable then that may be why nothing is passing through to the cab, will pick up a 2 pole cable and try again.

Unfortunately the are no distinguishing marks on the amp that denote the type of connector they are (maybe on the inside).

Cheers

2. Hi All,

I have today binned out my amp leads and cables not only because they were old but also because they were probably quite dangerous too 😕.

Now I have replaced them, all are fine except for the speakon - speakon going from amp to cab. I am getting nothing through to the cab at all, not even a hiss or hum.

Could I have gotten this connected wrong somehow? Are there different types of speakon cables? And the I've just bought the wrong one....

I am using a W Audio Horizon 1100 and an EAD foundation cab, I have looked at the manual for the amp and I have to admit don't really understand what it is talking about when it refers to connections for the outputs. The cab however does accept jack leads into the centre of the connector so I know it's not the cab as it works fine with another amp I have.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Its light cheap and vastly underrated if i had known i could have stuck a 1u vented cover in the package with the amp.

Not to worry, I still haven't made my mind up as to what I want to fill the gap (if anything) yet.

4. Just another question,
The dbx manual says that an eq should be used in the 'sidechain' when using with a multi-way speaker as the compressor will be before the crossover. I have an EAD 212 which is a 3 way design. Is this a must or will it not make any difference?

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but this is my first rack set up, so can do with all the advice/help I can get.

Cheers

5. Thanks for the suggestions guys,

Have searched high and low for the pizza oven and death rays but no joy I'm afraid. But in other news, I like the look of the dbx compressors. The 166xs seams to be within budget too, has anyone used one of these? Or is the 160A the one to go for?

Cheers

6. Hi All,

I have a 3u rack with a DHA pre and a 1u power amp on the way, I was thinking of a BBE sonic maximizer for the final space but thought I would ask here if anyone had any other suggestions.

Cheers

7. Not owned a single 8x10 cab myself but did have two 4x10 trace elliot cabs. They both sounded great and it was entirely more versatile for smaller gigs.

That said a trace 8x10 was up for sale on the forum for only a couple of hundred the other week, might still be there if you like the trace stuff.

8. If you can't find a preamp that suits the sound you're after, you could consider getting one built....
DHA (Dave hall amps) do some custom work and did me a rack version of their VT2 pedal. Fairly inexpensive too.

9.
What's wrong with running in bridge mode?
Absolutely nothing, just a mere observation.
Running the xls bridged will allow for no lower than 1 4ohm load, but the QSC will do a 4ohm load per side as far as I understand with not much difference in terms of power output.

Reliability is key for me really, as both will give the power I am after albeit in slightly different ways.

10. Hi All,

With the imminent arrival of my new custom Dave Hall pre, I have narrowed my search for a power amp down to the xls1000 and GX5.

This will be my first pre/power set up and I would appreciate it if any other BC'ers could lend their experiences (pros/cons) of these to help me decide.

I will be using a BF Big Baby 2 cab, playing a passive wawrick corvette.

I have to say that I am leaning more towards the GX5 as I think it would be more versatile in terms of future expanding of the rig and realise to achieve the same output power I would need to run the xls1000 in bridge mode.

Many Thanks
Gui
