  1. Please excuse my ignorance as I am a guitar player by trade.

I have a nice Vintage V4 Bass (P-Bass-style thing) and I'm about to do some recording in the studio with it. I'm looking for suggestions on what to use as a mute for the strings. Currently, I'm using some foam for the job which you should be able to see in the image below.

Are there any other things I could try that might yield better results? Felt, etc

My reason for muting is that I want a vintage tone for the recordings, with minimal clank and to make the notes more percussive. I'll be playing with a pick, as I like that fast attack it gives the notes on more complex runs.

  2. Apparently, these new Classic Vibe models have a better break angle for the neck slot and they also list a bone nut, plus that Mustang bridge. Compared to the earlier models, they are better in terms of being easier to get set up without having to shim, change the bridge etc

I found the Newtone strings made intonation a breeze and fixed that flappy low E of the standard factory strings.

  3. I just bought myself a Squier Classic Vibe Bass Vi and made a little setup 'How To' article on my blog that may help a few people out.

Great little instrument and pretty solid all around. It could be upgraded with new hardware, but it isn't actually needed.

Therefore, if you are on a tight budget this may help you out a bit. They suffer from intonation issues from the factory and this fixes those problems nicely.

Hope it helps out a few people, as I really enjoy it as an instrument and it is a lot of fun to play.

  4. Computer Music writer Martin Delaney has kindly written a new two-part tutorial for my guitar blog site. He is a good friend of mine and also one of the world's top certified Ableton Trainers, and also a great bass player.

I figured it might be interesting to some of you and so will share the links here for you all. Part one is live today and Part 2 will be scheduled for next Saturday.

  5. This might resonate with some of you.

Playing At Home vs Playing The Gig

Martin is a really great live performer and he kindly shared his thoughts on my blog about his bass journey.

I thought this might be enjoyable for some of you, as I am predominantly a guitarist 'that dabbles in bass'.

Whereas Martin is a music technology master, who actually plays the bass for real!
