That tele bass!!  Black/maple, short scale, under 8lbs.  Be still my beating heart 😍  Is there routing under the plate or would it come off to give a clean body?

Hi Paul. No routing under the plate and if you order one I can even not drill the screw holes for the plate if that's the look you're after.

2. Hi All,

Just a quick introduction to say I've started using BassChat again. I'm not sure why I stopped for a while, Facebook seemed to absorb my time. Anyway, if you have any questions about my Retrovibe products please drop me a line and I'll do my best to get back to you as quickly as I can. Cheers, D

HELLO! :)

I was summoned and I have appeared.

So Retrovibe and Chowny are working together in an official capacity. We were already using a lot of the same production facilities and working fairly closely together. So it made sense to combine it all.

This allows us to consolidate orders, shipping, manufacturing buying power and marketing, have a central UK contact for the factory etc. It's a growing enterprise and works very well for all of us.

So currently we make all the Retrovibe bass designs under license - and Retrovibe work with us like a sort of in-house design team. We still have our own models. And we also have Retrovibe models released under the banner of "Retrovibe by Chowny"

We have a similar arrangement with Scott Whitley to make the SWB basses under license.

Working together EVO has been redesigned and greatly improved. We have a version with Davie504 (linked above) and also an upgrade to the existing one here http://chownybass.co...t/evo-standard/ . Both of these feature the Retrovibe Stinger '77 Pre-Amp as standard.

All of us (Scott Whitley, David from Retrovibe and I) will all being going to NAMM together. Which will be a laugh :D

I hope that makes sense.

That about sums it up! Thanks Stephen.

This bass is new. Classic retro styling combined with modern hardware to give a huge range of useable tones.

Scale length: 34inches
Width at Nut: 42mm
2 x MM-style humbucker pickups
Maple neck with rosewood fretboard
20 medium frets with shark tooth markers and white binding
Solid basswood body with Cherryburst finish and matching headstock

6 bolt neck joint

This bass is in excellent, unused condition and has been set up with a low/medium action. It plays really nicely and is sure to turn heads. It is one of only 4 made with this specification.

6. Retrovibe Zygote Bass in Transparent Black!

This mahogany bodied bass is new and is a tribute to the Carl Thomson basses used by Les Claypool in Primus. The MM-style humbuckers each have their own Volume and Tone controls. In addition, the tone knobs are wired in a variation of Peavey T40 wiring which allows them to sweep between single coil - series humbucker - treble rolloff. This wiring mod, together with the pickup placement gives a huge range of useable tones. I did consider adding an active circuit to this bass but decided the range of tones is already so large that an active circuit was unnecessary.

The Zygote is nice and light at around 7.4lbs meaning you'll find it easy to play for hours without any kind of weight-related back strain.

I have also added a black, single-ply control cover and retro Hi-Fi knobs to complete the boutique look.

Despite being new there is a small blemish in the varnish on the back of the neck. This is purely cosmetic and only noticeable on close inspection.

Scale length: 34inches
Width at Nut: 38mm
2 x MM-style humbucker pickups
Jazz profile maple neck with rosewood fretboard
24 medium frets with shark tooth markers and white binding
Solid mahogany body with transparent black finish
High-mass black bridge
Closed black tuners
4 bolt neck joint
Weight: Approx 7.4lbs

This bass is in excellent, unused condition and has been set up with a low/medium action. It plays really nicely and is sure to turn heads. It is one of only 12 made with this specification.

They appear to be 'copies' of the original Stingray bridge that had the mutes and was phased out around 1996. However they just have a massive gap between the saddles and end of the bridge and look awful. It'd probably be possible to saw it shorter if you could clean it up well and somehow touch up the missing chrome.

There must be one maker of these bridges that supply cheapo bass makers worldwide and if so, I bet Sterling SUBs use them too. It's the main thing that puts me off any Stingray copies.
I am just about to order some shorty Stingray-type bridges. They should be here in a couple of weeks.

Oooh now that sounds like a whole lot of fun! Out of curiosity, do you make any basses to order? Perhaps with that mod and a custom see-through colour? No worries if not, I'm just considering my "next bass" options (I'm a basschatter after all...) :)
Custom colours are expensive for one-offs but I can certainly add series/parallel switching either by push/pull pot or mini toggle switch. Personally, I prefer the toggle switch. Either would be an additional £25 per pickup or I can supply a wiring diagram and you can do it yourself for free!

Thanks for doing the comparison (and glad you've given the SGC a little TLC - I bought a 301 new in 1994 and it was utterly fantastic, as have all the ones I've owned since). I actually meant to ask about the Zygote vs. the SGC oops! Same thing applies though I guess except the Zygote doesn't let you do the single coil thing with the pups?
Hi Mornats,
Although the pickups on the Zygote have their coils wired in series as standard, they are 4-wire output so you can add series/parallel switching to either or both pickups for a huge range of tones. This is a mod I do to all my personal basses...of which there are way too many!

A bit of a bump for this but I really wanted to ask about the Retrovibe Zygote bass (this one http://www.probass.c...ygote-ZYRT.html) that David brought up. I was too ill to make it and would really have liked to try one as they look just fantastic. Any chance they're lightweight with a nice thin jazz-style neck? :)
Hi there,
The Zygote weighs in at around 7.4lbs or 3.5kg and I specifically designed it to be lightweight with a nice fast (24 fret!) jazz-style neck.
I know jimrs2k was quite taken with it and spent some time playing it so maybe drop him a line for an independent overview. In the meantime, please ask away if you have any other questions.
Thanks,

David

The original pre, as you said, was pretty brutal. I put a retrovibe in it and it's still got a powerful output, but sounds much better although the volume is still pretty much on or off.
Hi Geoff,

I just came across your post and thought you might be interested to know that a couple of other people contacted me about the on/off nature of the volume control. It seems that certain pickups provide an input level which when amplified causes the volume control to be almost switch-like. After a little experimenting I found that if you are having this issue you can reverse the white and yellow wires on the volume pot and you will get a smoother volume adjustment.

Hope that's useful.

Regards,

David

12. Hi Meddle,

Nice work on the wiring mods. I totally agree about the 2 tone pot point and I have plans to make different use of the 4 knobs in future!

Just for the record your bass is a Vantage 5 rather than RV5. I did make a small number of RV5 basses which were more like Mr Hall's shape but that "iconic" headstock on a 5er meant lots of head dive, so I stopped. That and being asked to of course!

David

Sure why not. I've modded mine though: I never see the purpose of two tones on an instrument. If you can be bothered with '50s Les Paul wiring then you can balance them slightly, but in general each tone control works as a master control, so other than being able to switch from a bright-toned to a dark-toned pickup there is no real point, in my book. So, one tone control became a coil split for the MM pickup and the extra pot you see is a bass-cut on the bridge pickup. This way I can get Rickenbacker tones (come at me, John Hall) by switching in an extra 47nF in series with the bridge pickup. I broke out the Forstner bits and added a side-mounted jack.
