Cheers Ed, I had a listen to you latest recording too! Very nice. Unlike most of the other comments, I liked the first 40 seconds very much....and the rest as well! Good to hear an english accent, and a damn fine voice too. Shame your taste in M/C's isn't as good though ;-) (mind you, life would be boring if we all liked the same things)

My old TBird, well, feels like it as its recent and I've played it almost every day for 2 years.
Purchased from Salop Music, my local, after it being the only decent bass they had.
After being a Fender player for years and a real hate for Gibson basses (bad epiphone experiences) this changed the game and Ive loved this bass and Gibson since.


This is my Les Paul I purchased from Bonners Music. Simply fell in love with the Vintage Sunburst, Slash written all over it (in bass form) :) Edited by bigsmokebass

Anyway:


1974 Gibson L9-S "The Ripper", with aftermarket pickguardian celluloid pickguard (like the very first Rippers would have), and with an upgraded 6-way rotary switch (thus giving the standard switching + neck solo and parallel out of phase)...

This is a Gibson thread! Lol. The Jazz was a non export CIJ 66RI that has since been sold. It had a metal nut, Badass II and a pair of one off pickups that were modelled on the Geddy Lee sound. She was a beauty! Dot and bound neck and everything. I just never liked the way jazzes sit in rock mixes and the neck was a bit thin for me.

Those are just utterly lovely, especially the '64 II and IV!!! Sexiest pics on this or any other porn thread....

My '65 T'bird IV (top of page 3 I think) is my all-time favourite bass, but there's something so classy about the single p/up II model.

I'm currently modding the Fender / Warmoth Fenderbird I had off BigBassBob with dual Thunderbucker ranch p/ups and '60's type bridge & tailpiece to use as a gigging workhorse - I'll post in the build diary forum (as it ain't a Gibson....)

Some real drool-worthy Gibbos here, keep 'em coming......

I thought the control knob spacing on the '64 IV didn't seem quite right! Looks lovely though - what amp do you play them through?

Agreed about the "sweet spot" - I've been quite intrigued by the Lull Tom Petersson sig model - http://mikelull.com/site/instruments/signature/signature-petersson.html - it looks wrong, but I bet it sounds massive

I mailed Tony from Pickguardian if he could help he. He said he could, but he didn't have an actual template for an (early) Ripper, but he gave it a shot, and it turned out it was 100% accurate and a perfect fit (there is NO gap between the guard en the pickups. In fact, the guard is so snug, that the pickups stay in place without screwing them into the body). This is a very early Ripper, and those early ones had a celluloid tortoise pickguard. Instead of the 4 layers that Fender used, Gibson used a single slab of tortoise, quite thick (5mm), but tortoise shrinks and warps over time, and those singleply guard are all severely damaged or cracked beyond repair, like the one [url="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/180/405130705_89e6fb1741_z.jpg?zz=1"]Nick Movshon[/url] has. This one came to Belgium with a shoddy painted piece of plexiglass as pickguard, made into shape with an axe and blowtorch). He could have made one in real celluloid, but this one is a plastic variant, which is identical in looks & swirls (even has the small rimples in the surface, like celluloid has), but without the chemical instability. Here are some pictures I took today, with the cover in place. It looks kinda reddish, but it depends on the lighting, from reddish to virtually black.

Lovely bass, sounds great too, and they did a good job with the pickguard. I got a 3-ply tort guard from the States, which fits well, but the knobs are positioned wrong. Might give pickguardian a try.

Does my birthday cake count as bass porn?

Funny you should say that, I have found a surprising lack of dive with a suitably grippy strap. It sort of feels like a half hearted attempt to take a dive but gives up cos it seems like too much effort :)
