Barefaced guitar cabs?

As a guitarist in a metal band as well as bassist, I use a Line 6 2 by 12 cab with the speakers swapped for a Celestion Vintage 30 and a Hot 100. The amp (Matamp GT1) is set pretty clean and it sounds beautiful. Distortion comes from my fuzz pedal and the speakers handle the sound brilliantly. Plus the cab is on wheels and weighs loads less than our other guitarists 4 by 12.

I've not tried Eminence speakers but have played through most modern Celestions and those 2 get my vote for drivers.

PA type cabs for guitar... don't they need an extra poweramp for that?
Or would the most common guitaramps be able to power that?

I asked my guitarist (not much of a gearhead btw) what he would want that is not available out there.

What he definately doesn't want is 4x12" cabinets.
No matter how lightweight you can make them, it's the bulky size that is a drag.

loose ideas we came up with:
- ministacks, 1x12" straight cab and a 1x12" slant cab on top
- extension cabs for combo amps
- experimenting with 15" speakers for guitar
- some sort of subs that can be powered by common guitar amps

The vertical idea might also be nice.
Would a 3x12" cab vertically in line work? And put your favourite guitar combo on top.
Or 4x12" in line, with the top half slant maybe? (Well, that basicly would be your original idea, except all into one cab. :) )
2x15" cab vertically, top half slant.

Just our crazy ideas

About amp modelling, I don't know how other users think about this...
But from my experience and some guitarists I played with, using Line 6 PODs...
Speaker modelling doesn't speak to me that much.
I always turned it off, just amp modelling, into a poweramp or regular amp into regular bass cabs or guitar cabs.
For gigging use I always considered PODs just as preamps, while the rest of the rig is real.

I don't know how the majority of guitarist POD users feel about this though.
