TGEvans Posted September 20, 2009 Share Posted September 20, 2009 Right then, whilst I was trying to sell my G & L, even though it did not, it turns out there are loads of G and L fans out there from all the interest I had. I have now decided not to sell, turns out it will be coming in pretty handy soon enough. Anyway, as far as their Jazz basses go,how do they compare to the Fender jazzes? and even the lakland/sadowsky jazzes? The chances of finding either in the UK seem pretty slim though so I'm keeping an eye out for a used one in the States that the owner will be happy to ship to me. The new JB sells for $1100/1200 new which is the same as a MIA Std Jazz. imo G&L should do well with their bass given the vast options,lineage and superior build of their bass. Haven't seen any used,they're that new any JB-2s I've seen seem to go for $700-900 used. SB-2's about the same I've only seen a few SB-2s and neither of the JB's in the UK. I'm still torn between either a JB (20 fret/4 bolt) or a JB-2 (21 fret/6 bolt) I love this colour on the JB hope you find the bass you're after! and if theres two give me a shout cheers Keir Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
LeftyJ Posted September 22, 2009 Share Posted September 22, 2009 Wow, that last one is very pretty indeed. I used to own an SB-2 for a while and loved it too. Didn't play it in my bands though, so I sold it. But it was one hell of a bass! I mostly play my ATK's in my metalband (and soon a Stingray 5) and my Rickenbacker and Italia hollowbody in my folkrockband though, and occasionally my Jazz. But it definitely was a great bass. I usually had the splitcoil turned all the way up, and used the bridge pickup to add some punch and brightness to my need. Some people complain about the lack of a tone control, but to me that bridge pickup was the best tone control I could ask for on that bass. And with both pickups turned up full the bass had an amazing slap tone. It was beautiful to look at too! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dub_junkie Posted September 22, 2009 Share Posted September 22, 2009 (edited) I remember that SB-2 from a couple of months back LeftyJ. wrong way round but lovely all the same SB-2 is indeed a great bass. my one has a 3 way pickup switch and a tone control.Most players will use the P and blend in the single coil as a tone control but I've gone the other way & ramped the bridge single coil up (and lowered the split P)to match the output of both p/ups. Its the best passive bridge p/up sound I've ever had on any bass ever - cuts through anything. which is just as well as the split P is huge sounding. I love the bridge pickup solo'd and I'm glad I have it even if its not being used the way it was designed/intended. My L-2000 can do many things and is a great bass for loads of different tones but it cant get near what the SB-2 does. maxiburke Posted September 28, 2009 Share Posted September 28, 2009 I'm a G&L fan through and through, I had been playing a Fender Aerodyne for years when I picked up and L2000 Tribute and it blew the Fender out of the water in all respects, build, tone and variety. I have been playing a friends SB-2 for the last while live and I love it. Huge sounding bass, great compliments on tone from the layman and players alike after gigs.
