I'd certainly like to hear the Robert Palmer 80s stuff remixed. I'm a big fan of his but some of that production - oh dear.

F*ck me! I never knew that! Freur was really a sort of squiggle rather than a name, wasn't it?

Jon.

+1

Imagine all the awesome songs that could be rescued. Brendan O'Brien did some cracking mixes of Pearl Jam's 'Ten' album for the reissue, took all those comedy drum sounds and massive guitar reverbs out and gave it a new set of balls, sounds great!!

But since the mid 70s when there's been enough tracks available to not have to bounce downs on anything but the most complicated of tracks, production has been a fashion thing. For me it is an integral part of a recording a places it in time. Plus you just know that in 10-15 years time the re-issue of the 'Ten' album will seem just as quaint production-wise as the original sounds now.

As for Pino - he only played on one Freur track on the first album "Theme from the film of the same name" where he is credited with fretless bass and stick. The other bass guitar parts on that album were done by Alfie Thomas from the band and on the second album by Jake Bowie.

Wow, hold ya horses. Are you telling me that the Ten album has been re-mixed and re-released?? Is there a big difference between the two? I love Ten but I did find some of the guitar very weedy and plinky plonky.

As for TFT, awsome band. I love Mothers Talk, Woman In Chains, King Of Spain, Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Great great songs.

I've long thought that Wouldn't It Be Good contains the finest guitar solo never played :)

Listen through it in your head and you'll hear the lead break played on guitar. Listen to it for real and it's keyboards. Surprises me every time!

It's actually played in unison on guitar & saxophone.

Hell yeah! They did a bunch of different re-releases, I think it was earlier this year. Brendan O'Brien had already remixed a track or two for the 'rearviewmirror' greatest hits thing, but the whole album got done. Sounds much more ballsy and like his stuff on Vs, I like it!

See BigRedX's point about the production placing it in it's time though, it does have it's charm! I'm just a fan of his sound, I guess, I love the stuff he did with RATM and Incubus too.
Tears for Fears used Pino. Case closed.
Freur used Pino. Case closed. Interestingly (or not) Freur became Underworld - "Lager lager lager lager" (Born slippy)

Pino - bringing bass goodness wherever he goes.
Pino is a dude, as for Freur, I remember them, very left field...doop, doop.
Sisters of Mercy were great, really liked some of their stuff.
One of my favourite bands ever. First saw them at Plymouth Top Rank just before 'Body and Soul' was released-was absolutely blown away and went on to see them three more times. I absolutely detested all the synthy pop bands around at the time (including Tears for Fears!) but I had a special hatred for The Thompson Twins, because they released a single called 'Sister of mercy'. Every time I was asked what music I liked, and I mentioned the Sisters of Mercy, I would get 'Oh yes, Thompson Twins'. NOOOOOO!!! NOT THE BLOODY THOMPSON TWINS!!! NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BLOODY THOMPSON TWINS!!! AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! etc. etc.

It used to annoy me somewhat. I was later to be horrified to find that one of my favourite Debbie Harry solo songs, 'I Want That Man', was written by Alannah Currie of the bloody Thompson Twins!
Whilst all this was going on, I was listening to stuff like Husker Du, The Three Johns, Screaming Blue Messiahs and the Gun Club. Never had any time for the Tears for Fearses, Howard Joneses or Nick Kershaws of the time. Loathed the lot of 'em. Quite liked Heaven 17, but that was about the extent of my liking for synthy pop.

Mmm should we take it that you didn't like the Thompson Twins then?

I always had a soft spot for Talk Talk. They looked crap but certainly delivered on the songwriting and playing front. The last two albums (essentially Mark Hollis and their producer/keyboard player noodling in the studio with session players) were almost permanently in my CD player during the early 90s.

Check out the drummer in this video.
Dear me... Tears For Fears, Nik Kershaw, Go West!?!

They were uncool back in the 80s and guess what they are still uncool now.
So what? If I gave a flying fart about 'cool' (who exactly decides what is and isn't 'cool' anyway?), I wouldn't own 80% of my CDs.

I'll second that. I'm off to listen to my a-Ha albums. :)

I once did a motorcycle escort job for this lot. The band were really nice guys except for the pretentious git of a singer, I can't even remember his name, the one with the Frank Spencer hat, you know !

They were playing at a outdoor festival in Derby. At the same gig I also worked with a very young Take That and Sonia who was an absolute angel, (even though her music was crap) :)
