An idea that crossed my mind is a "strings party": each person interested would bring along a set of (spare) strings to put into a pool, and could try out any other set in the pool. Basically you could try out alternative strings at zero cost. There are risks of mix-ups I guess, but I have heard of this being done in other contexts (students at music college).

I thought the guy who came along to talk about set ups last year was great (apoligies that I've forgotten his name). Can we get him in again?

Hi,

That was Joe White.. Could ask him again though there were a few murmurs last year that at £50 a set up, some people thought he was a bit expensive..

Anyone have any views on this?

Cheers

Nik

It's where the action is such that the level of fret buzz is so high, the note actually stops sounding. You tend to get it at the extremes of the neck - ie the first few frets and the frets nearest the body (especially if you happen to "bend" the note in pitch)

Just an idea: I don't know if there are many players going that don't already do their own setups, but If anyone wants a free setup on their own bass while learning how to do it as a one to one tutorial including trussrod tweaking, bridge & pickup adjustments and possibly neck shim, I'm happy to do that - maybe we could have a setup bar if there's much demand & anyone else wants to throw their hat into the ring?

I'm genuinely surprised by that. He's done several setups for me and they were all fantastic. Whose bass did he set up that choked out?

I'd be happy to be your teaching assistant on this - I did a basic setup workshop at the Northampton bash a couple of years back.
I would suggest that you make it a hands-on workshop though, otherwise you'll spend all day doing free setups for everyone else.

Musicman - I'm not sure who's it was. It may have been Kiwi's (but don't quote me on that - he was down the side of the room I was when the setup was being re-setup).

EDIT - come to think of it, it may have been a dark blue G&L - maybe Stringrayfans?

while I would never turn down a decent free set up, I do actually want to be able to do it for myself. I know the basics, but applying the knowledge under the eye of someone who knows what is meant to be happening would be invaluable.
