Pete Stevens built a 3 octave fretless bass for Steve Chesney, but I don't know of any 36 fret Wal basses. Also, I haven't seen any through neck Wal basses.

That's the one I meant - 36 lined fretless :)

Ah that reminds me ... Bailey Brothers in Bristol make acoustic guitars but did make a few acoustic basses too and Thomas (Will) Williams made the occasional Fender-alike. However I think thy were more assembly jobs than "made from tree wood" ones.

John Birch as a brand are still going although obviously the man himself is no longer involved. Their current website was in my original list of UK luthiers, however it's latest incarnation doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence about the seriousness of this venture. I've played a couple of the new guitars and wasn't too impressed with them TBH. Haven't yet managed to try a bass, although do fancy the look of their Rickenfakers...

Not at all impressed with the Bailey Guitars web site. There is at least one bass on there but it's not exactly easy to find. Maybe someone should give them some advice on how to build a user-friendly site.

I've never seen a through-neck Wal either; I think that Pete & Wal felt that a properly made bolt-on provided more than enough sustain..

Great idea this thread - should it be made into a sticky at some point Mods???

Singling out Shergolds/Burns (a particular favourite of mine) I cant decide whether I love this or hate it - I definitely don't like the price.

Are we limited to solid basses, or are acoustic ones allowed too? In which case

Nigel Thornbory - dunno if he's still making them www.highlystrung.co.uk

Correcting myself here
The Bailey Bros are amp repair people rather than guitar makers.
It's Kinkade Guitars that make the acoustics including this one

That's the one I was trying to remember. My friend has a Kiff acoustic bass.

So no one's mentioned Paul Everson, even though he's a member here and he's got three pages in this month's BGM? (Beware: the website's hideous.)

I don't understand (looking at the "Nouveau Simple") how a bass made of solid wood can come in under 4 lb. :)

That is pretty amazing (if true) a boon to all the back sufferers - my Overwater perception comes in at 6.5lbs and its tiny
At the other end of the scale(s) there is a Ricky 4030 hamburger on eBay and guy says its 14lbs!!!

They Eversons do look cracking though.

Good point, there - i think it's safe to say that, for most of us, contact with a luthier will be more for ongoing maintenace etc rather than our full blown dream custom.

I dont think my plan of collecting one from each builder is going to happen now (unless me balls come up :) )
I think we are hitting well over 60 makers at the mo'

And if i restricted it to a BritBass I would miss out on lots of lovely stuff I GAS for usually

Now I wonder if as a collective we have an example of every one........
