markdavid Posted July 26, 2009 Share Posted July 26, 2009 Apologies if this has been asked already (search was not too helpful) , Im looking to buy a Squier classic vibe bass and will be buying online and am trying to decide between the 51 p bass (single coil) and the 60's p bass (split coil pickup). Only problem is I don't think ive heard anyone play a 51 p bass (whereas ive heard loads of people playing the split coil p bass) , can anybody name any bass players that use 51 p basses ? I was only listening on laptop speakers, so maybe I didn't get it all, but it sounded to me like Ed Friedland on a 50s or 60s Precision sounds like Ed Friedland on a Precision, and Ed Friedland on a Jazz sounds like Ed Friedland on a Jazz, regardless of the price or label. The thing missing from that is the band dynamic. I've got an MIJ standard P and an MIJ 51 RI P - they sound reasonably similar alone, but in the band mix the 51 RI is much growlier. Dr.Dave Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 Talking of Dusty - I was playing him in Portugal at the W E , big stage , hired in SVT/8x10 , I didn't want to put the fixed neck EpiEx I normally use for the ZZ trib anywhere near the monkeys at Jet2 so I used my 54 single coil P (neck off for the flight) , the blue fower one. Fair enough , the pup is a SDQP 'upgrade' but the sound was just massive. Ampeg set flat , no graphic , hit the low boost switch............massive. I've been using it less at gigs of late , mostly because I've been playing a bit of Motown at home so I had flats on it. Now it's got roto's back on I'll be playing it live a lot more.
