Nothing particularly unusual here (except for the 3-string), but some nice slightly different body shapes, and I do like the way the wbody woods have been cut on the 4-string so that the grain emphasises the shape of the bass. The red eyes on the lion are what make it super tacky/special/cool in my opinion. I had a ton of stick from my band when I had a Warwick Fortress with it's phallic upper horn . Mostly guitars rather than basses but I'll post some links if anyone is interested... I haven't forgotten about this thread, but work's been mega busy and I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple of luthiers so I know that their work is still current. Hopefully there'll be some new posts next week and then I'll be on to stuff that's no longer available new in the new year. Here's a NAMM update for some of the makes mentioned previously in the this thread. FretKing. After casting doubts about FretKing's current existence and the fact that the website I had book marked is pretty moribund, here's a brand new Europa bass spotted at NAMM And more importantly a new [url="http://www.liveitlive.co.uk/"]FretKing Site[/url] I was lucky enough to catch Trevor Wilkinson on the Vintage stand at Music Live 2007 and mentioned that I had a custom FretKing Esprit Guitar and was after a Europa Bass. He mentioned that he was just finishing off a white Europa and would I be interested? Unfortunately I managed to lose his email otherwise I might now be the proud owner of this bass and not have to content myself with pictures of it from NAMM. Anyway moving on. Here's 4 new Lace Helix basses Five strings and fretlesss models. Can't wait for these to be available in the UK More details [url="http://lacemusic.com/news/news_articles.php?articleID=18"]here[/url] and good to see a company offering fretless models for less than the fretted equivalents. There's also rumours that there will be a helix with the twisted neck to match the original Cybercaster guitar. Finally a halfway decent photo of a Moses Graphite bass... A 5-string Vertical Jump Bass with a blue acrylic body. Very nice indeed... And amazingly more pictures on the Moses Graphite website [url="http://www.mosesgraphite.com/customguitars.html"]here[/url] including some of the Custom Headless Starhawk Bass. I hoping to have some new basses for your enjoyment (or ridicule) at the end of the week and then hope to be updating at least once a week for as long as there are instruments out of the ordinary out there. I looked at the website [url="http://www.bas-extravaganza.nl"]http://www.bas-extravaganza.nl[/url] and just thought it was great. Using Babelfish, I managed to type in Dutch and translate his messages back. For those that were just too difficult or obscure, I e-mailed my Uncle who's been living in Holland for the last 30 years, so he came in very handy. Anyway, here's what I bought: This is the Kinderbasje or "Child's play" bass and it was built out of the spare pieces left over after building the "proper" basses. I love the shape and it sounds pretty good too. The neck profile is a sharp V, but extremely playable, and there are letters instead of side dots so I'll never forget where "G" is. It's a great little bass and I thank BigRedX for starting, and continuing, this thread. It's been a real fun and interesting read PS. Please if anyone else buys a bass as a result of the info on this thread please post them up... I'll continue on from where 7string left off with my latest purchase... A Reverend Rumblefish JJ 5-String. After failing to buy a couple that appeared on TB just before Christmas, this turned up on eBay in the UK. And very nice it is too... In need of a setup to suit me, and some attention to the controls which will happen over the next week or so, but the initial impressions are good; I can certainly see what all the fuss is about them on TB. A cool retro-modern look and an punchy sound, with just a hint of hollow body colouring through my studio monitors - I won't have a chance to use it through my rig until our next rehearsal. There's a slight tendency to neck-dive given the light body and the wide 35" scale length, but nothing a comfort strap can't handle. I think that bridge construction is the only way that they could fit one on without it over-hanging the end of the body (although that hasn't stopped Reverend). Had a look at the RPG site as well and there's plenty of other scary stuff including some of those weird combination double necks that have been turning up on eBay recently, and all of it left-handed. Actually looking at the site makes me glad that I ended up playing guitar and bass the 'right way round' as it brings home the sorts of compromises that left-handed guitarists have to endure (and normally while paying a higher price) in order to get something outside of the mainstream Gibson and Fender styles, until they reach the custom build price point. That's because the website is brand new as of November last year and still very much under construction. From what is there they seem to do both guitars and basses in this unusual shape which I think works much better for the basses (the guitars look kind of blobby...) The strange body shape is supposed to accentuate 'pure' tones according what little information is on the website, and I'm not entirely sure about the positioning of the G tuner on the 5-string models.
