Overwater and Hill Basses

Has anyone had any experience of having an Overwater bass made? They look beautiful and the chap who makes them is great and seems very passionate and knowledgable, but I just don't know much about them. I'm looking at having a bass made (not neccessarily an Overwater).

I'm also interested in Hill basses, think they're a US outfit - Stefan from DMB is playing these now and I love the tone he gets on the records. Found some sort of website (http://www.hillguitars.com/) but no phone number, email contact or anything. Does anyone know anything about these?

Otherwise, any other suggestions?

Want something with throat and a growl but liking the idea of steering away from mainstream...

Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi I love my Overwater Progress and I'm going to have a Perception fretless 5 made for me. if you want to come and try my one you are welcome to pop over.

It's a good time to order one to as they are knocking half the price off of the cost of any upgrades.

Recently acquired a Perception 4 standard (entry level bass) and It's excellent.
Build quality is 100%, comfortable, not too heavy, looks gorgeous in the flesh,
and i'm still learning the array of sounds from the pre-amp.
You won't be disappointed I promise.
Top company and people, easy to deal with and keep you informed of progress.
They have their own page on here

I believe that Hill basses are made by Jon Hill, starting out in '89. Later he worked for Dean but in '02 he set up his own business again in Cleveland. Initially he set out making quality standard guitars and basses with 5 employees, so on a fairly large scale. From his myspace page I understand he's now in Florida and concentrating on basses - the website is indeed under construction but yoy may contact him through http://www.myspace.com/hillcustomguitars
As for Overwater - I really love mine and they're a great company!

Hi...

I'm on my 2nd Overwater. First was a Progress 7 that was fantastic and I now have a J Series which was built for me. The whole process was brilliant, Chris, Laurence and the boys really look after you and cater for your every need.

I would highly recommend a chat with them to discuss your needs, you won't be disappointed.

That's very good of you - looks like we're in the same sort of area. I'm in Farnborough in Kent, whereabouts are you based?

I own two Overwater originals and they're fantastic instruments, although neither were made especially for me so I couldn't comment about that part of the process. You can see them both in my post at the beginning of this thread. The fretted bass was my main for most of the 90s and stood up to everything I threw at it both musically and from a playing PoV. The only reason they're no longer my first choice basses is because I have since bought 3 Gus Basses and a Sei!

Hello, recently I have searched long & hard for a fretless 4 & during the past weeks I have been fortunate to place my hands on the likes of Zon,Pedulla,Warwick & Fender, but rather than boost the American or European economies I suggest you contact Chris or Laurence at Overwater (email or phone) which is the route that I finaly took & in my case was fortunate to purchase a used Progress fretless that they had in stock,it arrived this morning & it is truly stunning.Out of all the instruments that I have played this is far & away the best use of my hard earned cash, good luck in your quest, mike b.

Chris sent me pics of your fretless progress just in case I was interested in it unfortunately it had one string too few for me, lovely looking bass though.

What is this Over the Hill Water bass of which you speak? :)
Seriously though, Overwater are my 2nd favourite UK custom builder, and that's against some stiff competition. I chatted to Chris May for quite a while at a guitar show once, a lovely guy with a genuine passion for the craft. Alas, I think the closest I'll get to owning a 'real' Overwater is one of their School basses (which I bought as a basket case and am very gradually bringing back to life).

I tried a second hand Overwater 5 string in Music Ground (M/c) a few months ago. Fell in love with it but didn't have the ready cash. Went in last week and of course it had been sold - kicking myself now. Will have to save up for a brand new one. Actually i want 2 - one fretted and one fretless (5 stringers of course).
