Sorry, bumping an old thread, but thought I should bring attention to the GS bass that's popped up on Manchester Bass Lounge. Looks to be a sexy bit of kit: http://manchesterbas...nge.com/?p=4975

Amazing - I'd say that was a bargain for something the quality of a Gordon Smith!

edit "It was bought yesterday" .

I've seem a Blueshift II locally. Finish is well worn and it's clarty .

They're asking £170 for it.

Now the thing is I really don't need another bass but I'm drawn by the " Made In Great Britain " on the headstock, sadly such a rare occurrence
these days.

I'm not all that patriotic about GB it's just I reckon it would be nice to have a British bass again.Last one was a Wal back in 1990 and I can't see me buying
another of those :)

What's the general feeling Gents ? Is it a good idea ?

Stunning blueshift! Never played a double neck but being a Gordy it will be lovely

It is - the fretless neck is the best I've played. But dear god it's heavy, I swear that when you open the case the room gets darker as the light gets sucked into its gravity well.

So there is a small old school guitar shop in Hanley Stoke on Trent the guy has lots of secondhand gear in and usually a few basses. I popped in on lunch a few times if I could when working in the area. He had a habit of putting some of his own gear on display on the walls and one of these occasions I spotted a Gordon Smith Tbird it was his and not for sale at the time but he let me have a play and it was a real beauty! Played really well and sounded massive.

I've had a GS 1.5 for many years - a beautiful and simple guitar, basically a LP Jr copy but very well made.

I remember playing a gig (lead guitar at that time) in the 70s (in Cheshire, where I live) and a couple of guys came to me before the gig and asked me if I'd like to try one of their guitars. It was a Tele Deluxe copy that sounded and played beautifully. Of course, they guys were from Gordon Smith :-)

A couple of years later I had a day off work and ended up running an errand to the GS workshop for the local guitar shop I used to frequent. Really nice guys and at that time the workshop was little more than a large shed in the garden.

I'd love a GS bass if I saw one for the right price. It would be great to gig with Brit bass and amps. And no, I can't afford anything from current UK builders :-/

I know this is an old thread, but that Gordy explorer bass is identical to one I used to own back in the early eighties, when I lived in south Manchester. It was made for me by Gordon Whittam, who was the founder of Gordy instruments and who had a workshop  in Altrincham. He also made me one of his early blueshift fretless basses, which I still have.

Just looking at it again, I'm pretty sure it's the same bass! I don't recall Gordon making more than one fretless explorer like this!

As the (rather poor) pic of my old '84 GS Galaxy on p1 is deleted; I've reattached here.  Traded a while ago, and I do miss it, but realistically got too many nice semis already.

Te point about Gordon Smiths is they were very workmanlike instruments made with non-fancy tonewoods, and mostly inspired by classic US designs.   What was so good about them was the level of craftsanship that made them a joy to play - I don't think I've ever owned a bass that I could get the action so ridiculously low as on my old Galaxy.
