The Burpster Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Has anyone taken the standard neck ‘bolts’ which are really woodscrews and replaced them with proper bolts and inserts like Montys or Nek tite? I like proper engineering and whilst I know the woodscrews have been used for decades but these products claim to increase sustain and tone. i like the idea I could torque them identically. Thoughts? 1 Quote
PaulThePlug Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) Dunno about increase sustain or tone... but i likes the engineering approach. Although the internal threaded part looks quite short... but the height of a nut i spose. I'm sure there are such things available from Spaldings (who i use for Stainless Dog Point Grub Screws for Bridge Saddles) or other Fastner shops. Edited January 13 by PaulThePlug 1 Quote
BlueMoon Posted January 14 Posted January 14 If it is a bass that you have to regularly adjust the truss rod (assume neck heel Fender type), then yes. I have neck inserts on a bass where that was the driver. Fairly easy job for a competent DIYer. As @PaulThePlug said, I didn’t notice any difference in sustain or tone though. Quote
MichaelDean Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I did it on a Harley Benton tele I owned. I felt like it made it more resonant. No scientific measurements were made though! Easy enough to do with a hand drill. Just make sure you go deep enough for the threaded insert and then use a countersink bit to just bring the edge down a little before putting the insert in. Quote

Andyjr1515 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Most of my builds have been neck-through but, when I was asked to build a bolt-on neck or do a major repair, I have always used screwed-in inserts and machine-screws. Whether it adds anything the human ear can pick up is debateable but a tight joint will certainly suffer less string vibration losses than a loose one - and you don't have to worry about stripping threads with proper inserts. 2 Quote
itu Posted January 14 Posted January 14 There's quite some information here about threaded inserts, you just have to do some searching. I like them, easy and functional. My travel bass has a Status neck with inserts. I detach the neck before going to the plane. Soundwise it doesn't matter, wood bolts or inserts, but inserts are reliable, and enable multiple removals without any issues. 2 1 Quote
