I have a new 55-02 for a couple of Days now and Man, that is an awesome Bass. This brandnew Bass was for Trade, so I offered mine as a Trade Object, but the Owner didn't like my offered Bass. So I offered my Bass in another Board as a Trade Object. Someone offered me a Spector Euro 5LX. I traded my Bass against the Spector and then the Spector (wich was not really my Cup of Tea) against the Lakland :)

Hope you like it.

Here's a recent acquisition, a very rare USA Lakland 55-76... possibly the Holy Grail for a Stingray 5 fan who wants 19mm string spacing... that'll be me then! Custom scratch plate added by Martin at The Gallery. Plays like a dream, sounds phenomenal, light as a feather, but still balances beautifully.

According to Lakland's serial number lists, this one was made in 2002. I think they only made this model for a couple of years - not sure whether they just weren't popular, or perhaps Ernie Ball leant on them to 'cease and desist', but they're very hard to find. I've owned several Laklands over the years, and I'd never even heard of them until fairly recently.

I found an article online from a few years back suggesting EBMM were gauging interest in a wide spacing Stingray 5, or 'SLO Special 5', but when I contacted EB they said they needed 125 pre-orders to go ahead with the run, and only got 3! The No Treble article is here:

http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2011/07/01/ernie-ball-offers-test-run-of-music-man-stingray-5-string-bass-with-19mm-spacing/

Spacing on a standard Stingray 5 is 17.5mm, but that extra 1.5mm makes a lot of difference, for me anyway.

I put a couple of pics up in this thread ages ago when I first had this modified, but thought it justified another round... this sounds the business through my Walkabout head!

I played my Decade through my Walkabout combo on Friday - it did sound great. My pickups are both still in the original positions.

Mesa & Lakland are a fantastic combination, definitely! The Walkabout really gets the best out of the Chisonics- I can get really close to Ben (Incubus) Kenney's recent live tone with the pickups where they are now, especially with a good dose of preamp gain.

Before I committed to having the body routed, I also tried swapping the neck PU in place of the bridge PU (and vice versa) as an experiment- this also sounded great... very Rickenbacker-esque! :)

Do you mean that the neck pickup and the bridge pickup are different?
[/quote]

Yes, the magnets in the neck and bridge single coil Chisonics are orientated differently- I assumed that each magnet would be right in the centre of those massive chrome casings, but they're not. Instead, the neck magnet is right over at the neck-side edge of its casing, whilst the bridge magnet is way over on the bridge-side edge. You can check this for yourself by dangling a tiny Allen key over the pickup cover, and observing where the magnetic field pulls it... hope that makes sense!

By having them change places, I found that the neck pickup sound tightened up nicely, becoming slightly less hollow (in a good way), whilst the bridge pickup became less honky, and thickened up enough to be really usable when soloed (more of a Rick bridge pickup tone). I far preferred the tone with both pickups on full as well! :)

Ah, OK, I see what you're saying. The original Decades with Dark Star pickups were oriented like that too:

Actually I don't quite get why you would want to turn them round and put the coils so close together. It might as well be a single pickup bass. Not that there is anything wrong with single pickup.

I agree, that would have been silly and pointless! No, I reinstalled the pickups in their original positions before having the routing done- the magnets line up pretty much perfectly in Jazz Bass position as they are now... :)
