Not spending enough time practicing.
Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?
My employers demanding long hours, girlfriends demanding attention, my own laziness.

Guitar or drums? A promotion is a promotion, I'm not fussy.
Why do you think you want to go there?
I can't find a drummer. :)

I used to, back when people would have me anyway. These days I'm happy if I can sneak into a band without anybody noticing, so I try to play a bit more generic.

I've never had a P-bass. They always looked a bit ropey to me. I had a couple of Jazzes and they were ropey enough to put me off the P.
What made you the bassist you are today?
Listening to late '80s/early '90s hard rock/metal and hip-hop as a kid, delving back into the great funk/rock/soul/blues/jazz music of the '60s and '70s when I hit puberty, then going further back to its roots all the way back to gospel and delta blues, then coming forward again to the great music of the '60s and '70s as an adult.

An important part was thinking about what I like about music, what I hate about music, and what I want from music as a listener.

Impressed and inspired by two guitarists as a kid who put me off guitar but made me want to play music, especially with them, my current guitarist Ryan and my cousin, Miran, who I've played with in various bands over the years.

From before I even owned a bass, I used to jam with musicians who were much better than me - and that carried on for my formative 3 or 4 years. I also picked up as much basic theory as possible from the people I played with. I used to mess around on the bass as much as possible - but I never really tried to learn tunes I listened to (hence my crap ear).
Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?
Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Beck, Cream, Hendrix and Marvin Gaye (as artists), Jack Bruce, Paul Jackson and Louis Johnson (as bassists), as well as my guitarist friend growing up and figuring things out together, Jan Ozveren, my bass mentor whose six lessons I am still trying to digest now ten years on, David Hadley, and my old bandleader, sax/keys jazzman virtuoso/nutjob Adam Davy.
Where do you think you want to go from here?
Double bass: jazz and country - but never leaving the funk (or the blues) behind.
Why do you think you want to go there?
Jazz, because I need to start understanding all the clever sh*t my keyboard player and drummer keep pulling out, so that I can (i) keep their respect as bandleader, (ii) understand their side when we disagree musically.

Country - have you seen Southern girls in America or psychobilly girls here?
Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?
Yes. It's all in my phrasing. Take that away and I don't have anything.

Errr... the look, more than anything, seeing as I've never played or coveted one.

What made you the bassist you are today?

Getting the prog thing out of my system in my formative years. I got bored of it, and concentrated on being a band member instead.

Then, being lucky and determined enough - in equal measure - to play with some of the best songwriters and drummers I know. That was the best early education I could have. IMO.

Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?

Lots of bass players, but the biggest contributions were from the songwriters and drummers I referred to above.

Where do you think you want to go from here?

I want to fuse smooth soul Jazz with modal Jazz and create a challenging new subgenre.

Why do you think you want to go there?

OK... that was a little fib.

I like what I'm doing, and I want to do more of it.

Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?

Yes. I have no idea what it is, though!

Specialist question: What is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass? :)

Ah, they're overrated.

Sadly, I think it was the funk-tinged pop of the 80s. I stop a lot of notes!

Persistence and drive/passion. I'm 100% certain that I want to make a living out of my hobby, and not be one of the 40+ year olds who wind up on the pub circuit reliving old glories.
Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?
Dave Savage. The man showed me in person how strong "On the One" grooving really is, and out of all of my lessons with other teachers and other sources his teachings still stick with me.
Where do you think you want to go from here?
I just want to get the certificate to say I'm a Professional Bassist so then I can instantly try and hunt down a position and try and make a name for myself.
Why do you think you want to go there?
As said, I can't see myself doing anything else...well unless someone offered me an acting role and became uber famous by default.
Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?
I do, but it's taking it's sweet time to have it fully make it's presence known.
Specialist question: What is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass?

I'll throw the curve ball.

Why the P-Bass?

Of all the amazing/interesting/clever/pretty basses you go for the Kathy Burke of all basses.

P-basses have one tone, and thats a dull thud with oomph, or less oomph if it's made in Mexico (Which is ironic considering it is the home of the Burrito).

What made you the bassist you are today?

A life long addition to grooves.

Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?

Mark King in the late 80's, Bernard Edwards, Gene Perez, James Jamerson and Julian Crampton. Most recently I've discovered Sharay Reed and I'm still trying to explore Meshell Ndegeocello's approach.

Where do you think you want to go from here?

Sharay Reed and Martin Taylor

Why do you think you want to go there?

Sharay Reed: There's noone else who better epitomises what I would like to do with the instrument myself.
Martin Taylor: I'd like to be more musically independent because being a bass player when you're not in a band can be mighty boring.

Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?

Apparently I do, but I couldn't tell you what that is. All I know are the comments and the reactions.

Specialist question: What is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass? :)

Its a leading question so I'm not going to respond.

What made you the bassist you are today?

A combination of laziness & clinical depression, which meant I wasted a lot of years not playing when I should have been.

Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?

The people I decided I DIDN'T want to play like.

Where do you think you want to go from here?

I really don't know. I joined the forum partly in the hope it might push me in a definite direction od some kind, even if that means giving up playing. I figure that would be better than floundering around in a mire of indecision & inaction.
What I think I'd like to do is learn some serious musical theory, as I've always felt like a fraud for not having the first idea about any of it.

Why do you think you want to go there?

To give me more options on the instrument (or any instrument for that matter).

Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?

People have told me that I have a distinctive style, so I suppose I must have to a certain extent.

Specialist question: What is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass? :)

That I could get a good price for it & buy something decent instead.

What made you the bassist you are today?

Joining a band. We only have 1 guitarist, so i had to learn quickly how to fill the extra space.
Cue huge pedal boards and extended bass runs.

Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?

Probably a combination of Justin Chancellor, Chris Wolsentholme and Timmy C

Where do you think you want to go from here?

Back to a much more basic set up.

Why do you think you want to go there?

As much as i love my pedal board (and i really do) I hate being judged by it.
Turning up at a gig with it, other bassists turn their noses up at it, sound men dislike it, but mostly because it weighs a ton

Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?

Possibly. If i lost my pedals though, that personality would go...

Specialist question: What is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass? :)

Hmmm, not really a P fan

What made you the bassist you are today?

Being drawn to bands & songs with distinctive, upfront bass parts, regardless of style & genre, and incorporating that into my songwriting. And not getting too hung up on technique for technique's sake.

Who do you think had the biggest influences on how you play now?

Over the years, probably Bignose out of Rush, but to a large extent myself - creating bass parts for music I compose on g*it*r.

Where do you think you want to go from here?

I'd like some level of validation for my band and the quite breathtakingly great music we make.

Why do you think you want to go there?

Because I think we - I - deserve it, and I am naive enough to hope there's still some degree of meritocracy in Art.

Do you believe you have a "personality" on the bass?

Yes - I always get a lot of positive comments on my playing, and the role it fulfils in my band. I seem to get noticed more than a lot of bassists!

Specialist question: What is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass?

Can't guarantee it's a '71 - we'll have to settle for '70 - '75. But I love the 3-piece quartersawn maple neck, the slightly narrow veneered ash body, the 7-screw bridge, the white plastic trussrod cover, the position dots which end at the 17th fret, the "Made In Japan" stamp on the neckplate, the Ibanez logo on the headstock... you never said 1971 Fender P bass, did you? :)

Jon.

Mom, sister and bass tutor giving me their love of Motown, metal and jazz respectively, and me being obsessive enough to practice.

Fieldy from KoRn made me want to play bass so that's probably a good start and my tutor also had a large influence. Also as I play using three fingers I should probably credit the guy from a band called Hondo Maclean. They were supporting Sikth and it was only the second time I'd ever seen a bassist play live (first time up close :) ) and it just absolutely blew my mind that you could use three fingers to play bass. I'd only been playing for about two months and the idea had never even occured to me! Used three since that day

First off, I've forgotten the questions and the order but here goes.

Seeing Ronnie Wood switch from guitar with the Birds to bass with Jeff Beck and as a drummer, playing with bass players that weren't very good so thought I could do better.

Influences, Dave La Rue, Jack Bruce, Brian Bromberg.

Want to be able to get up with anyone and be able to play along and not screw up.

Need to try and succeed at whatever I do. (That doesn't always work out)

I'm very much a less is more player so probably don't have a bass identity.

The P bass thing? Only ever owned a really cheap copy, bought to deliberately smash up at the end of Won't get fooled again so never really wanted one. The Jazz is a better instrument. It does more stuff.
