Hey guys, happy new year!
im looking for a new super protective gig bag to use on train/flights etc. I want the best possible protection (it’s gonna be protecting my Wal).

importantly, I want to eliminate the possibility of zips scratching my bass unnecessarily.
ive had many different types of gig bag that protect well, but over time the zips can nick the paint.
Any advice would be warmly appreciated, and if anyone knows any suitable cases in jan sales, that would be ace!

cheers!

I've done a lot of travelling and flying with my Roscoe in an iGig gigbag, and I've never had any issues. I think they stopped making them but if you can find one, they're excellent.  I've also done a lot of travelling with a leather Reunion Blues gigbag, and that's excellent quality. I've got no problem putting my nice basses in either of those cases.

I can't say I've ever had an issue with zips scratching my bass with any half decent gigbag.

Another Basschatter spotted this for £50 the other day. Its almost a full on Pro Go (which i use and think is an excellent bag) but only half the price

I was happy to pay a bit more for a Reunion Blues Aero bag. Top quality and no risk of zip nicks! Plus, with the red velvet lining, it looks like Dracula's coffin ... which is nice. I can't see them on sale anywhere but Thomann would be a tenner cheaper than Andertons if you are prepared a to wait a couple of weeks

I don't think you can find any better than the Mono Bag M80.

It's pricey, but hey it's Wal going inside and I put my even more expensive Le Fay Remington Steele 6 RHT CC CAP Big Block in one of those without any fear.

But first check this and you'll understand why it's the best protective gig bag to date : https://monocreators.com/

And the two specific versions for bass :

I’ve used various bags over the years. Here’s a list of some I have experience of, and my thoughts:

Mono Vertigo and M80

Very good, though quite expensive.

The M80 has more storage than the Vertigo - whether that’s good is up to you. I’d personally rather carry two bags than stuff the everything into the gig bag.

I did find the neck holder to be too narrow for wider necked instruments, I play 6 string basses - the neck sits on, rather than in the holder, which is a fixed width moulded affair.

Mono also do a much cheaper Bass Sleeve. This is fine for instruments with flat headstocks, Fender etc, it’s too shallow in my opinion for instruments with tilted back headstocks.

Protec Contego

Heavier than the Mono, also much cheaper. These though offer great protection for your instruments. They’re a hybrid design, using stiff padding rather than soft foam.

They don’t seem to have a retailer in the UK, but you can get them from Thomann. The neck brace is a better design than the Mono. It uses a Velcro strap rather than a fixed-width moulded brace.

Gruv Gear

Awful. A really silly idea, very uncomfortable, my shoulder was aching after walking less than 100 metres with the one I had. Fine if you’re travelling by car though I guess. They are quite long though, so ideal if you own a long instrument.

Reunion Blues Aero

These are really nice, I use one of the at the moment. They offer great protection for your instrument, whilst not being too heavy. The shoulder straps are easily stowed away when not in use, which is a useful feature. The neck brace is similar to that on the Protec bag, accommodating instruments with wider necks.

Flying - as in it's going in the hold?

I'd be wanting a full blown flight case for that!

When I'm flying I pretty much always take my bass on as hand luggage, but a couple of times I had to gate check it and have it in the hold. It's always been ok.

I have a Fusion, which is heavy for a gig bag, but gives very good protection. Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.

Absolutely this. I have a F1 and it's superb. Pricey, but very good protection, good storage, and very very comfortable to carry, unlike the Mono M80...

I have had mine since 2014, used regularly (several times a week usually), and it's still in great condition.

They don't make the F1 anymore, but their Urban seems to be the 'new F1' as far as I can see.

They go on sale every year. About three years ago I bought one in every colour. They're nice bags for the £50 I paid but I think best avoided at £120.
