Ten Years After - Watt; The Faces first album.

This track has what I consider one of Alvin Lee’s best guitar solos - from the album Watt - bass is pretty good as well.

I was 10 in 1970 but didnt start buying singles till around 72/73 with Sweet, T.Rex, Mud and Bowie. Albums came later in 73 with Bowie Pin-ups and Sweet FA.

In 1970 i was probably listening to what my parents liked. Anything from Elvis, Engelbert Humperdink, Tom Jones to Tijuana Sound of Brass and Music from the Greek Islands the latter giving me a lifelong love of Greece.

Family: The Weavers Answer & Strange Band (double A side).

 - My first introduction to real rock music. I was "in town" and my older brother asked me to buy it for him. I listened to it and was hooked - and still am 50 years later!

- and in the same year their albums " A Song For Me" and "Anyway" - although I didn't buy those until a few years later.

Well I would have been 8 for most of 1970 and I do have faint recollections of music on the radio and TV before I got interested enough to want to know who it was or even to buy records but it's much later on when I started to discover and like the music that I'd missed by 5-10 years - it's only then and long after that I came to really appreciate what I'd missed. 1967-1977 was an incredible time - I could have picked any of those years - especially the first 5 years of the 70's - I was reading Carly Simon's biography Boys In The Trees which I found ages ago in a 2nd hand book shop - I only wanted to know why she and James Taylor divorced - I haven't quite worked that out yet based on what I've read so far - it wasn't just the affairs, drink or drugs apparently - they both still live in Martha's Vinyard and she clearly is so positively open hearted and has no problem saying she still loves him in many ways but he can't bring himself to even talk to her - this is worse that Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham - at least they have worked together! Anyway - that's why I was listening to James Taylor and thinking about that time - they were married between 1972 and 1983.

Because I only had narrow interests then which have only got wider - I wondered what I had missed.

If this was your budget for singles at age 13 in 1970, I’m starting to wonder whether you had ‘independent’ means @Happy Jack 😂😂

You've reminded of several long forgotten singles here - I probably have about 5% of these still in 45 rpm form. I reckon my vinyl album collection also is heavily skewed to 1969-71 or so.

That was actually a list of the 100 best-selling singles (in the UK) for that year. 😉

But you piqued my interest as to which of them I chose to buy at the time, and the answer turned out to be just nine of them. Some interesting choices too ... I bought When I'm Dead And Gone but not Lola, for example.

Interesting - I have 14 of them including Let It Be, Instant Karma, Black Knight, Sweet Dream, Love Like a Man, Let’s Work Together, both Chicago. The accent is very much towards the ‘progressive’ music as it was called then. I’m afraid the reggae and soul was very much the preserve (for white youths) of the skinheads and their nearer relatives (latter day mods). There was some total dross in the list, as you can see.

1970 was my first rock concert - Canned Heat supported by The Groundhogs - Birmingham Town Hall - the Groundhogs were excruciatingly loud - I don’t think I’ve encountered a louder gig since!!
