Any EMG experts? Fizzing EMG pickups

Hi folks

I recently acquired a set of EMG passive PJ pickups and on installation the P pickup is really noisy.  The J is silent as a mouse per normal EMG standards.

So far I have:

  • double-checked the wiring
  • tried floating the bridge (per their active pickups)
  • Tried reversing the connectors
  • Mr Bagsieblue very kindly came round with his spare pickups and an EMG passive vol pot so I could do a bit of swapping around but nothing changed

One thing I notice is that if I turn the pickups upside down the hum disappears.  If I just rotate them it makes no difference.

Any help welcome at this point as I've run out of ideas.

Sounds as tho their out of phase bud, have you tried reversing only one pickup connector ?

Hey, good to hear from you.  Yes I tried all the combinations of that I could.

Eyup ead, when you say you inverted the pickup, did you invert the whole thing, i.e. both halves, or just one half relative to the other?

If the whole thing it may just be that you altered its pickup direction so it's not getting whatever is causing the problem. Is it worse when you stand near such as TV, strip lights etc?

'Fraid I have no experience of the passive EMG, just actives which I like alot. However, as with any sealed pickup, if anything goes amiss inside it's skip time!

Thanks @hubrad, I only noticed when one half turned over accidentally when I was messing around changing the pots over to see if it was one of them..  I was actually thinking whether active EMGs might be a better option in the end.

Haha fixed.  I was actually my (quite old) laptop that cased the effect when it was switched on.  Weird.

I had an issue recently where my Wifi mesh always added a low buzz to my combo (of course it took me some time to realise it's the Wifi node), and it actually got louder after I installed passive EMGs. I moved the mesh node a few centimeters and the issue is gone. Interference can be serious :)

Strange the way EMI works.  I always thought the office was electronically noisy as it's also my music room but I now wonder if it's just the old laptop.
