To me the best bass for slap has always been the Jazz Bass…

I too have always liked the Jazz Bass slap sound (and finger style) but to me a Stingray (and particularly a dual pick up one with both humbuckers engaged) gives more girth to the sound - less ‘boingy’ sounding - I guess we all have our own likes and dislikes.

Marcus Miller’s active Jazz tone is more beefy than a passive Jazz but the Stingray still nails it for me 😀

I've always thought of these things as a bit of a running joke. Mark usually has great tone but I thought the jazz sounded pretty crap and the reports of them being a bit shoddy in person were enough to put me off. I've seen a few come up over the years. I'm sure they'll be as dubiously collectible as ever in the future.

Funny to think that just a couple of years later, Mark would be getting the first Status Kingbass in his hands, IMO the best sounding basses he has played other than the old Status Series II.

the journey of these was a bit convoluted, fender, sims and Iceni/Zoot all had a hand in them.

Hmm, I'd be interested to know how Mike (Walsh - Iceni/Zoot) was involved.  I must get the full story off him next time I'm at his discussing progress on my Zoot 'not a MK Jazz type thing'.

He apparently sprayed the bodies from fender in a colour called Peacock blue.

Sims did the final fit and finish with the LED necks…and yeah. It was all a bit of a nightmare apparently.

4 or 5 of them ended up with tort pickguards etc.

doomed.
