Searching for this specific Nordy VJ5

A slightly unusual post...

I wonder if anyone knows of, or owns this Nordy VJ5? I played it at bass direct around 10 years ago, I wasn't in a position to buy it but really clicked with it - on the off chance it might be an instrument that somebody knows of or owns and might consider parting with, I thought I'd stick a post on here as it's a small community so you never know.

FYI I'm not interested in any other Nordy's though appreciate they're all very similar.

Thanks in advance bass community!

Did you ask Mark at Bass Direct.? Failing that ask on the Facebook Nordy club. They will probably have seen it. Or Talk Bass if it was sent abroad. It will most probably have, made for Bass Direct in the neck pocket, as mine has. Bass Direct had a big batch of Nordys made for them back then...might help if you know the serial number which is on the neck plate.

I remember when I was trying to find out info on my Nordy VJ5.  Call it geekery, call it.....

Yes ok its geekery. Like you fingerz Ive really clicked with my VJ5. Probably the best 5 string I've ever played.

That bass you are looking for is on this Bass Direct sold page. Amazing specs. The one your after is number 10 down the list. mine is 17 down. https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Nordstrand_Sold.html

I remember playing the 3rd 4 string down with the Amboyna top and at the time it blew me away.

I'm a complete geek too, it's a compliment : )

Yes that page takes me back, I think your one was for sale through them recently? Looks really nice and glad you've found an instrument that really works for you. I played the blue one and at least one other I can't remember now, but it's horses for courses, that one felt like one that got away plus I'm always extra scared of buying new as I can never be sure until I've done at least one gig and some recording with a bass!

Yeah that looks like Tom Kenrick’s bass. He does some great videos on YouTube under FreeBassTranscriptions.

Incidentally I played a white VJ5 with blocks and binding that bass direct had in around that time. I loved it and handed it back to Mark and bought a few other bits.

My wife was a bit quiet in the car in the way home and it turned out she was sad we didn’t buy the bass. I said I couldn’t afford and she said that “we could have worked something out”. I’m still gutted to this day.

Guilty! I bought the bass in January 2011 from Bass Direct (I haven't checked the neck pocket for an inscription...). I remember playing another Nordy that didn't feel as good, and I still haven't found any other 5-string with a neck that's anywhere near as comfortable.

The bridge pickup became faulty a few years ago, Nordstrand were amazingly helpful; they rewired the pickups and sent me a new set of Big Splits to try for free. Great company to deal with and it's a shame that Carey doesn't seem to be making these basses any more.

@NJE Thank you for the kind words, glad to hear that people like the stuff I hurl at the internet!
