The Cure Bass Player

I saw the Cure a couple of times in spring and summer 1980.  I liked 3 Imaginary boys, the double A side 10:15 and Killing an Arab was great. I also loved A Forest and got that onto our setlist, briefly.  I haven't really heard much of their later stuff.

Like a lot of the preceding posters on this thread, I liked the Cure but they weren't a favourite band.

I was aware of The Cure, like most, but never really 'into' them until I saw them at Glasto err is it 2 years ago now? It was amazing. Loved the Bass VI stuff, and the regular Bass noise too. Went through their back catalogue on Spotify, loads of good bass noise and tunes to like.

I see the Facebook Post that started it all has now been deleted...

We've all been there, few sherbets too many...looking at pictures of your ex, or some other chunt that's currently p'ing you off...

Ah, sod it, I'm proclaiming it to the world...cue 27 missed calls and 49 texts from big Bobby Smith later...

The biggest ever feeling of the morning after "fear" ever, when 6 million plus Facebook fans of The Cure fans stalking you the morning after...

🤪🤪🤣

just check out this live concert track, definitely a peak, it is the cure with what i think was the best lineup including andy anderson ex hawkwind on drums. I love the use of the flanger here, they never seem to do it like this anymore. Funnily enough i saw thornally first so for me he was the definitive cure bassist.

I was a bit too young to see The Cure in 84. Saw them a year later at Brighton Centre with what for me was the classic lineup and just as the were on the cusp of playing much bigger venues (particularly abroad). Never really liked much of their music from Wild Mood Swings onwards but they were  always excellent live. I know a few ardent Cure haters who have changed their opinion after watching them at festivals.

Would have really liked to have seen them as a 3 piece in smaller venues.

I saw them in Finsbury Park in 1993, their only performance that year. They had lost...

*goes to Wikipedia to double-check which multitasking instrumentalist had left*

...Porl Thompson, so were just a 4 piece for the first time in ages. Having grown up listening to the great wash of sound on the Orange recording, it was really good to hear earlier stuff being played relatively stripped down again, eg One Hundred Years at 7'25".

The rendition of A Forest at the end seemed to go on forever

I was a late incomer to The Cure, being introduced to them - (I mean, like really listening to them, I always knew the singles) - by the now brother in law.

First saw them in 2006 when they played the Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust gigs, playing 37, 38 songs, over 5 encores, utterly incredible.

Fast forward a full 10 years and I next saw them at Wembley Arena, the Saturday night gig where they played 9 songs from "Disintegration", which was honestly one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

The last time was at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow, where they played the Glastonbury set, but a combination of the 10 hours plus rain, sodden, muddy ground added to the exuberance on my part with a few too many pre-match refreshments, leaves this one a long, long, long way behind the other two.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the "Pornography" / "Disintegration" / "Bloodflowers" albums are the ones to focus on, in my opinion...however special mentions to "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" and actually, bizarrely I do quite like the last two "4:13 Dream" and "The Cure" which were otherwise universally slated...!

The live gig on Spotify / Deezer "Curaetion-25" is also a pretty decent listen too - remember when that gig was announced and was desperate to get tickets for it, but couldn't work around work / holiday / personal situation at the time.

Each to their own I guess.

yeah i was at that same gig, did the quadrophenia thing and slept on the seafront, their best gig for me was Glastonbury about the same time when they played during a full on lightening storm which just took the whole experience up to a whole new level...robert himself remembered it as being one of the best as well.

I remember them playing Glastonbury when a helicopter had to land in the crowd.. can’t remember the year but am sure I’m not making it up!

Edit: 1990. Someone has uploaded the whole gig to YouTube (audio only).

I did think at the time it was a bit of a storm in a teacup. Glad he’s back and I hope whatever caused it has been properly sorted.
