Originally the whole point was to make your own unique stuff..

Ps  if you want to do the full monty, stick a couple of safety pins thru your face eh !

Thing is i dont remember any punk bands looking like this. It looks like fans took it to extreme.

These were the kind of original punks from 76- early 77 when the Roxy was going..

TBH i didnt pay much attention to the punk movement when it happened so my recollection of who and when is very very vague.

I've been learning the punk songs from youtube clips and i haven't, so far, seen any bands looking like the pic above. I may come across one as i get further thru the set but if i do it will be quite a low % of total punk bands i'm looking at.

Indeed!...tbh for the band you just probably want to look kinda like Mr and Mrs J. Public's idea of a "punk" it's not like you're making an authentic film set in 1977 !

There's millions of "punk" pics on 'tinternet to crib ideas from..

Please post a pic of your own "punk persona" though..! ;)

To be honest it was just gonna be faded jeans and a punk T shirt of some kind and hair in a ponytail. Bands are too fickle to be making drastic changes to my appearance. I'm probably the opposite end of the spectrum from punk but its all about enjoyment from both an audience point of view and for me personally.

Rest of the band typically wear same type of gear and not necessarily punk looking. At our age most people can fit any any realm of music style cause we all look like old Dads nowadays 😂

I was wondering what the others did.. You'd look a bit of a mug turning up in a party shop "punk" cossie if the rest of the band didn't :)

..you could always do the customary leather biker jackets, can't go far wrong there...

I know the band well to be fair. Drummer is in my other band and the female singer does backing vocals with my other band so its like a little family.

Drummer was with Glitter Band in 90's era and was never into punk either. Female singer is a brilliant front woman and is absolutely hyper. She had never sand in a band before them but she is good. She is a huge Stranglers fan and loves punk tho. The 2 guitarists are into punk and it was them that started the band. We've all socialised at various birthday bashes and shared the stage on a few occasions at same events.

Think that's one of the reasons i was asked as they all know me and how i play.

I could always turn up with a Ric bass and wearing a suit ala Jam style. Is that punk or New Wave or possibly Mod. ?

As far as we knew, The Jam were at the head of the mod revival. When we were being abused and chased down the street it was usually by blokes with short sensible hair wearing parkas with "the Jam" written on top of a target!

Yep it’s a funny old world now we all get on and go to the same gigs, given the rivalries back then, I suppose age both gives and takes away.

When we did the punk covers we wore black shirts, jeans & DMs with stripy ties, prob a bit like Green Day in their American Idiot phase. I used to get girls asking for my ties all the time, much to the annoyance of the rest of the guys. I think they read too much into it, said girls just probably thought I was the safest looking one in the band.

Sounds like a really nice set up you've got there..

Your suit idea sound good, but whatever you do ..

Take the Rickenbacker OK !.. 👍

I dont have a Ric bass but i do fancy one. Probably use my P/J or Jazz to start with. Dont think my Sandberg VM4 will look the part.

If all goes well i might pick up a Vintera P bass as i really like that version mainly because the frets are shallow compared to standrad P basses i've tried.

That's an unusual look. Any pics would be good to see that. I hate wearing ties so not something i'd wear. Shirts and ties for work for too many yrs and aint going back to that again LOL

I know what you mean, after being in the band for about a year I used the excuse of having my ties taken by adoring fans to ditch them full time. Open neck black shirts, black jeans & boots, instant Clash circa 1979 instead of “wacky” US high school kids.

To be authentic you want one of those plywood Hondo Rick copies, trouble is even they seem to go for stupid money now !

You can't go far wrong with a P bass tho.

Just buy an extra long strap for your P bass , get you best pick out the gig bag , practice a few sneers in the mirror , and your all set .

Man , I would love to be in a punk band , but I don’t think it will go down well with the resident pensioners here on the Isle of Wight .

I'm not usually a pick player but have made a point of using one for authenticity and apart from my pick hand getting a bit sore its really quite good fun using one.
