I've just been searching for reports on the later white over maple version and found someone on TB saying, "When I bought mine from Sweetwater, they had 6 in stock. All 6 of them weighed between 11.5 – 12.5 lbs."

😮

christ!
I'm so glad I'm not a West Ham (or any other team for that matter) fan...

9lbs is my Thanks But No limit...everything I have is under that, down to a 7lb 8oz Dingwall (which is the most resonant, 'alive' bass I own) - the last one I moved on was a BB1024 because it was pushing 10lbs...the BB414 I replaced it with is my heaviest at juuuust a smidge over 9lbs...but I only play that in one band, and that rarely...

Good advice. I'll be able to sit down for the rehearsal and first gig. Maybe not for the second gig, though. We'll have to see.

I sit down for all of them nowadays. But as we have a cajon player instead of a drummer, I don’t look out of place. 😉

I definitely think that ergonomics has a part to play.

Warwick Fortresses may have a rather large upper horn,  but the balance is simply superb and it keeps the first fret within easy reach.

Another mention for the Ibanez Affirma (ok, ok, I've got an EDA900) as being not only light but well-balanced and ergonomically forgiving (not so my EDB605. It's much more weighty)

Somehow, my Warwick Infinity SN4 manages to push the first fret away from the player. It's as well that they chambered it. It'd be a right old boat anchor otherwise.

Conversely, I found the Status Streamline to be too light for me. It wouldn't sit still, especially if I dared to move. Never had that problem with a proper Steinberger.

That’s why you compiled a list of every bass you’ve ever owned - perfect for forcing on people at parties:

”wow, that’s crazy! You want to hear something else weird? See that Yamaha BB over there?….”

Partygoer - "What, the blue one?"

Trav - "No, the one next to it"

Partygoer - "Yeah, you had that last time I was here!"

Trav - "No, that's a different one...."

Partygoer - '....Oh...."

Trav - "That's a BB1024. The one you're thinking of was a BB1024X which is completely different"

Partygoer - "I like the red one"
Trav - "Yes, nice to have that back"

Partygoer - "Was it stolen?"

Trav - "No, I sold it and you'll never guess what...."

Mrs.Trav - (to Partygoer) ".....The invitation was specific in that you wouldn't engage in conversations about bass guitars...."

Partygoer - ".... It wasn't my fault, he started it...."

Mrs Trav - (scowling) "Trav, the burgers are burning"

The only time I've weighed any of my basses is when I've sold them, in order to put that information in the listing.

I've only owned one bass that was noticeably on the weighty side a Yamaha BJ5B although in that case the sheer physical size of the instrument was more a problem than the weight. Any movement on stage had to be carefully considered so as not it injure bandmates or audience members.

My heaviest, by some margin actually, is this Alembic Spyder at 12.4 lbs. I don't take this one out as the bass in its case is not only huge, but the whole things weighs well over twice what the bass alone weighs.

If there was a sufficiently safe alternative to transporting this around, I might be tempted to rehearse with it occasionally since my rock covers band now has a Who track in the set 😂.

A normal bass case on top of the Spyder case which I think must be lined with lead or similar.

I just weighed the Spyder in its case and it comes in at 3 stone exactly 😰

I called Status and they quoted 7lbs for the Streamline.

I found the neck to wide particularly fret 9 onward ...but I have small hands...I wanted to try it for the low weight...but it had to go!

Couldn't say for sure (I didn't weigh it)

Don't know whether 7lbs is too light for me or the ergonomics didn't suit me. No matter what strap,  or how I adjusted it, the bass just kept bouncing around. The neck was worst. I spent more time trying to catch/ restrain it than fret a note.

I wouldn't say that I'm that heavy-handed with my R/H technique that it was me pushing it around.

Leaving aside the other issues I had with it, It just felt like a toy in my hands. Too insubstantial, and oddly tonally thin.

Quite so....It was more a not-especially-witty-at-all facetious allusion to the heated internet debates that can arise from the quest to establish where tone comes from.

Apologies if it came across as smartarsey.

Hey come on, this is Basschat not TalkBass, no need to explain irony on here!🙃

Just doing a bit of bass fettling so decided to do a weigh in session....I certainly didn’t like my weight.....

In ascending order.

Dano Longhorn - 5.75lb

JMJ Mustang- 8lb

Mikey Way Mustang - 8.25lb

Status CW Sig - 8.75lb

Ric 4003 - 9lb

EBMM Sterling 4H - 9lb

Really interesting reading Mart. I'm surprised the JMJ is as heavy as it is as the one I had was super-light. Still, I guess 8lbs is no fatty really.

I’ve had a few mustangs, they’ve all been around this weight. To be honest if it was much lighter I think it would be going into neck dive.

Pretty much what I expected. I have played just one Sterling that was very light. I couldn’t afford it at the time which was a shame as it was a bit of a unicorn. Nice list of basses.

Very true but I guess the shorter neck helps a bit.

That's a nice weight for a Ric :)

I think because the neck is a bit thicker overall and a wider profile it’s heavier. Mine likes to ‘hang’ horizontally. The Mikey Way hangs better for me....but doesn’t sound as good 😉

I thought the Ric was heavier, that was a surprise.

All of my 20-odd Rics have been around that weight, bar the first CS I had which was probably nearer 10lbs. My current 2 feel slightly under 9.

You're probably right - it's the effect of that wonderful though relatively large 4-in-line Fender headstock.

All mine are under 4kg these days, which is just the way I like it:

Fender P bass - 3.9kg

Yamaha BB604 - 3.9kg

MIJ Mustang - 3.6kg

I once had a Tokai T-Bird that weighed as much as my house, and I couldn’t even finish a set without swapping back to a fairly heavy P bass I had at the time which felt like a feather in comparison.
