What was the most expensive bass sale?

Suddenly struck me that we revere certain basses in much the sam3 way that guitars can be. I remember the hype over the sale of Clapton’s Brownie and Blackie guitars, but which bass:

  1. was the most expensive sale
  2. should, in your opinion, be the most expensive sale?

Im not sure if the Bass Of Doom qualifies but I thought it might be?

Thanks in advance!

Price: $384,000

The 1969 Fender Mustang, played by Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman recently broke records for the highest price tag on a bass when sold at auction in early September 2020.

(Of course, this was nearly a year ago.)

Coming in at number 2.

Made in 2006 for an unknown buyer, the Flora Aurum takes the term “premium materials” to an entirely new level. The body, shaped by hand, of course, is made of quilted maple and has a beautiful ripple pattern.

The fingerboard inlay has a floral pattern made of 24-karat gold. Each leaf on the pattern boasts a black diamond set in platinum. Elements like the bridge, tuner buttons, and knobs have been set by hand in massive gold, and the knobs are topped off with brilliant-cut diamonds. There are also green diamonds used for knob position marks.

Think the bass of doom cost Rob Trujillo $100k to get back from the person who ended up with it.

I’d say Jamerson’s “Funk Machine” would be up there (if found and verified).

Then Macca’s Violin - his second one which he still plays.

I don’t think there is a massive value in instruments owned by the types of players generally most popular with the members on a specialist interest bass-centric community. Bass has a much narrower appeal as an object of veneration than guitar. I would expect something like John Paul Jones’ jazz bass, or Roger Waters’ precision would make big numbers.

At auction I suspect McCartney's Hofner would attract the highest bids.

Estimates vary from £3,000,000 to £6,000,000.

After all, Ringo's Ludwig drum kit fetched £2,000,000.

Totally, and in addition to his obvious fame and profile, Mac C is probably about the only bass player the average Joe/Joanne in the street could actually identify as a "bass player"

I wonder how the Rick would do compared to the Hofner..?

I'd reckon most people wouldn't know Macca was a bassist. They'd call him a singer/musician/Beatle/composer/Liverpudlian before they'd say bass player.

The Rickenbacker is not iconic of the whole Beatles thing  in the way that the Hofner is.

The violin bass image stands for The Beatles as a whole

The Rick would probably be worth more than it is now if he'd left it in his homemade psychedelic paint job ! :)

I was thinking 8 figures at least. Especially if it was sold for charity, as the money in the charitable giving purses couldn't care less about value, it just wants to get spent.

Cheers all. I agree that a Macca Horner would be spectacular. Never knew about Wyman! A gold leaf fingerboard in the second post, could you imagine asking for a second bass like that “and could you heavy relic it mate?” 😀
