Lozz196 Posted June 21, 2021 Share Posted June 21, 2021 So, new bass day for me, a Fender Precision in black/black/maple. So what’s new I hear you say? Well it’s a five-string Precision, that’s what’s new. I’d seen this on here for a while and although never had a fiver before it’s my preferred brand/model/colour scheme, and as I’m not in a gigging band at present should I join one and then need a fiver it made sense to be prepared. Plus it would have really irritated me if that happened and I’d passed on this one and had to get a fiver that didn’t match the rest of my basses (CDO is a terrible thing, I even have to arrange the letters properly/alphabetically). Lozz196 Posted June 21, 2021 Author Share Posted June 21, 2021 I think B, E, A & G are Dunlop, D is Fender going by the silks. I prefer the feel of the Dunlop’s, though at home practice volumes I can’t tell any difference in the sound. I don’t know why but this bass just seems to sound right with flats whereas every other Precision I’ve put flats on didn’t do it for me - maybe they’re properly played in. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My advice would be to put away all your 4 string basses - the temptation to pick up what you're familiar with will slow you gelling with the 5er. Thanks Mick At present I`m tending to play it like a 4 string, only using the B when I need a note lower than open E, but that`s due to it both being new to me so getting used to it, and through a practice amp with 8" speaker anything lower than this isn`t that great. I may well put a round-wound B on it for greater clarity, something that Dave Swift does (or at least was doing). Re the 4s - I picked one up yesterday to gauge the action height and it was like a childs toy, how I ever thought a 4 string Precision neck was fat I don`t know, it was like a toothpick! 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I feel your pain! My first 5er was a SBMM SUB Ray5. Really nice thing, and I played that almost exclusively for a few years while I was in a hip hop band and a function band after that. Then I got my Dingwall and the neck on that is so much wider than the Ray 5 as you go up the neck (still comfy though). Thing is my main 4 stringer is a Mustang.
