Who was doing a sound like this (Thrash) before 1979?

What a band. Having seen (and met) them a few times back in the day, it’s hard to believe they’re not with us anymore. With all due respect to the other incarnations, Motorhead will always be the Three Amigos for me.

Lemmy was really heartbroken with Philthy died, just a month before him.

Yeah. Although they’d sometimes appeared to have a bit of a mixed relationship, you could tell how cut up he was.

Early hardcore bands! Check Out of Vogue by Middle Class in Doctor J's post as one example...

Sounds like Punk to me, with no Heavy Metal.

The answer is Queen on Stone Cold Crazy, Black Sabbath on Symptom of the Universe, & probably early Tygers of Pan Tang.

I would argue Overkill (the song) isn't thrash. Thrash was that fast, hardcore-derived beat, combined with metal riffs, rather than punk-type chord progressions - at least that's what it was back in the 80's, before the term got diluted by lazy journalists to describe the output of a cluster of bands rather than a style of music. It was never the type of double-bass drumming in Overkill. Bear in mind the geography - thrash was pioneered in California, the home of hardcore punk and those early thrash bands were most definitely exposed to it. You combine that fast beat with the riffs of the likes of Judas Priest, Maiden, Motorhead, Venom and NWOBHM and you get thrash. Singling any of them out for individual credit is quite wrong, in my opinion.

Lars Ulrich would disagree & from there more Thrash was influenced by Metallica.

Motörhead weren't the only influence to Thrash, that would be a daft statement, but they were the primary influence.

The same Lars Ulrich who spent years denying Metallica were ever a thrash band? 😉

Lemmy would never say MH were Thrash, he hated labels & started their shows with "We are Motörhead, & we play Rock & Roll!"

Indeed they were, and did, that is why there is a clear similarity in sound between motorhead (the track) by hawkwind and their early stuff. When we were going to gigs in 1980+, if we wanted heavy we would go to priest or one of the start of the bands that would be nwobhm, if we wanted rock we would go to motorhead or one of the older school bands that were around.
