Exactly.

Basically they have offered to collect and refund, as well as apologising for the mistake in rating the bass as being in 9/10 condition. I don't see what else they can do seeing as they don't actually own the bass and can't go against the owner's instructions.

They could do a whole lot more.........all that has occured is bad press for the sake of offering a discount........

The bass doesn't actually belong to them, so how can they offer a discount without the permission of the owner?

Yes i do take your point of course, tho I have no idea if it's a commission sale or it's their own stock, you'd think if it were on commission they'd have added something like "sorry as it's a commission sale we can't do anything". That would've clarified the situation but wasn't mentioned. I will hopefully get another email from them tomorrow anyway

I am assuming that it is a commission sale, as most of the secondhand basses on their website are (I have sold a number of basses through them on commission).

You take it on the chin!  They messed up, did the minimum they required and have generated bad press!  They should have offered a discount to the purchaser, apologised and subsequently generated good feeling with a premier bunch of bass players via the forum.........

Have you seen that it's "on commission" on their listing then ?  Interested as i may have missed this..

I have never seen any of their listings stating whether it is a commission sale or not.

I'm sure that they will think that they been reasonable in this matter - they have apologised and offered to stand the cost of picking the bass up for return.

They have done the minimum according to the sale of goods act.  If they think that is reasonable then that is their prerogative, not really the actions I would expect from a transaction of a company that I want to deal with.  Not personal, offered the minimum and all from their lack of detail.............

As you say they've fulfilled their "obligations"  but not addressed the "goodwill" or good customer relations element which I'd have thought would be important, obviously not. Maybe they're "big" enough not to be bothered, a bit like ebay !

I didn't say it was a commission sale, but a fair few on their will be. I've put about a dozen through there over the years and always get a better price after commission than selling privately, plus no hassle posting.

I'd certainly like to buy a 4 string basic, even tatty, US stingray for £700 odd quid if anyone's flogging one like that !

I bought a used bog standard 3 band Ray in a nice colour, a bit battered for around £750 in 2014 - I wouldn’t expect to pay under £1000 for the same thing now

How about a 1989 Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 2eq for £850 on Facebook Marketplace?

That looks a v.nice deal, unfortunately a bit above the contents of my wallet at the mo :(  I presume you have to be on facebok to see and reply to these, I don't do fb but as mentioned a few pages ago might be worth starting one just for that purpose !

Is the marketplace open to all or is it very specific groups only tge ads go out to, ie basses by certain makes etc ?  Excuse my ignorance but fb is something I've always avoided !

Don’t you just love the Basschat threads take a life of their own - this one seems to have become a repository for posting every low ball Stingray price on the net worldwide.

On the Bass Direct Sub what do ‘the experts’ here think is the correct rating of condition? And if @Waddo Soqable likes the bass why send it back because of the neck points - I would ask for a reduction - maybe £50.

But it’s all not relevant to this thread title anyway?? I am coming away with the impression that there are a number of market trader-esque of used car salesman/ buyers on the forum which will make me think twice about selling anything here!!

Very ethical of you. Personally I look at buying and selling things very dispassionately.

I try and do the ‘right’ thing basically - and yes I think there is a morality involved - I’m not in it as a business so can afford to take such a view - there are businesses which do the right thing and others which don’t . I’m afraid that market traderesque bartering is something that doesn’t appeal - particularly when dealing with luxury items (which musical instruments are).

I just take the stand that if I’m the high bidder I get it if I’m not I don’t. Not going to offer extra.

If some one is looking for a bass at a budget and people work together to find one in that budget I can’t see an issue with that either.

Well I certainly wasn't wanting to do Arthur Daley buy them and "flip" em type deals :)I simply wanted a bass of that type, that was within my limited budget, the suggestion of that ad was a good one and thanks for making it 👍   ...I'd much rather keep the bass and If the Bass Direct guy would bounce me £50 back that'd be absolutely fine and fair play, they've said they wrongly described it, their fault etc so I think the above would be reasonable. At last message however they don't seem to be interested in a fair compromise.

£50... Did you look to buy a 'that will do' bass?

If offered that one at £50 off or one without the damage for what you paid, which one would you take?

Not sure what it went for £700ish?... i'd be wanting a £100 back, or they can derrière about and come and get it.

They should be on the backfoot, don't make do, look out for what ya deserve, or ya may be a bit 'if only' dont make do with ya hard earned.

1 - they state they'd usually sell these for around £800? Absolutely laughable. Market value on a good USA SUB is anything from £450-600 (I couldn't sell mine when it was up for £500).

2 - BD have always been a bit overly optimistic with their condition ratings/description. I live about 20 mins down the road from them and have popped in a few times. The used basses are rarely as good as described, condition wise.

This isn't to rail on them too much as I have bought from them many times, and they are a great shop. We should be grateful to have such a specialist of their ilk in the UK.

I guess you’ve got the choice of sending it back and wait for another to pop up somewhere. Presuming used prices haven’t gone through the roof, you should get one between £500 and £600 I’d guess. As for the BD remark about normal prices, whoever said that there clearly doesn’t have a clue - BUT it will be a commission sale so very probably 15% added to the price the seller gets.
