1985

In 1985, there were available a handful of recent releases which I could have bought then, had I known what I would like, but which I overlooked, and only came to know and love later on:

Powerslave - Iron Maiden (Sep 84)
Ride The Lightning - Metallica (Jul 84)
Killing Is My Business - Megadeth (Jun 85)
Cyclone - Vow Wow (sometime 85)

Head on the Door - The Cure (Aug 85)
Meat Is Murder - The Smiths (Feb 85)
First and Last and Always - The Sisters of Mercy (Mar 85)
Psychocandy - The Jesus and Mary Chain (Nov 85)

But this is what, in 1985, I actually spent my money on:

Dream Into Action - Howard Jones

:/

I bought all of the above!

In '85 I was buying mainly funk and dub...

I was listening to mainly goth and indie stuff until a couple of years later when Echo and the Bunnymen covered “People are Strange” and the Cult “Electric” virtual Zeppelin covers took me in a different direction.

I was thinking about '85 recently... I too bought 'Dream into Action' when it came out.

So many other great albums and hits that year that I remember well, I was 14 and I guess we all have one of those years where music becomes so important. Hounds of Love, World Machine, This Is The Sea, Our Favourite Shop...Live Aid...first kiss, that's it, my first kiss was in '85.

Definitely a good year for me to reminisce about 😊

At 11, I was just getting into saving up for my own records. Had a few, not many. Had The Who, The Monkees, Adam &;The Ants...quite a selection.

They were quite pricey...£4.99 for an album on vinyl in my local Woolies.

I remember going in there, early Summer, to buy an LP. Choices were 'Born In The USA', 'No Jacket Required', and 'Cupid & Psyche 85'. All in the top 10 that week.

I liked, from memory, a song off of each. Looking back, this turning point was far more dangerous than I believed at the time.....!

Luckily, I went Boss. Next few years saw me becoming quite a fan, although I've not listened to him in years. I am forever grateful that I didn't pick either of the other two....one in particular.....an 11 year old going Phil? How that could have ended scares me now!

In 1985 I had trouble finding good-to-me new music, and I felt the 80s were becoming a lost decade.
Then this arrived:

Cupid & Psyche 85 by Scritti Politti.

Decade saved
(and I found a lot more after this, like Propaganda's A Secret Wish ).

Oh, I should have had that on my list, too.

Frustratingly, I had really enjoyed "Dr Mabuse" on Now 3, but didn't get around to getting to know A Secret Wish for another 30 years. Ugh.

ps I also knew of The Cure and The Smiths from early Now albums, so I really had no excuse :(

In '85 I was 12/13 years old. I'd have bought:

Powerslave - Iron Maiden
Ride The Lightning - Metallica
Killing Is My Business - Megadeth
Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
Spreading the Disease - Anthrax

My sister would have bought:

Head on the Door - The Cure
Meat Is Murder - The Smiths
First and Last and Always - The Sisters of Mercy
Psychocandy - The Jesus and Mary Chain
Phantasmagoria - The Damned

And I bought, for my sister:
Rum, Sodomy & the Lash - The Pogues

Love both of those. Another favourite from 1985 is Husker Du’s Flip Your Wig

Crikey! That's a blast from the past. I was a 15 year old guitar aficionado back then. I loved Kyoji Yamamoto's playing!

A few years later I bought Vow Wow V mainly due to our very own @neilmurraybass :)

I'm in the crowd on this recording..! Neil Murray was, unsurprisingly, superb with them, but I always felt that Kenji Sano had the better image.

I like the fact that there are a number of "closet" goths with the Sisters riding high with First and Last, well impressed!!!

Sadly never saw them live but did get to see The Mission and Fields of the Nephilim several times..
