Best way to clean fretboard

Hi all, I've recently taken possession of a second hand bass and I am about to give it a good clean before I replace the strings and set it up.

I normally use guitar fretboard oil and kitchen towel to clean all the gunk off the fretboard but before I get stuck into this one does anyone have any top tips for bass gunk removal?

Cheers in advance!

Is it a rosewood or maple fingerboard?

Any pics of the bass?

As the OP mentioned fretboard oil, won't be maple.

I use baby wet wipes first, to clean as much as possible, dry with kitchen towel. Leave for an hour to fully dry off. Then use Dunlop lemon oil fretboard oil, leave for 5-10 mins and wipe off.

Yes it's rosewood. Do you use the oily baby wet wipes? Wouldn't have considered using those but we do have a baby and associated wipes so might finally have a bass-related use for them!

A dull metal or plastic edge to gently scrape off the worst.

Fine wire wool with a little naptha (lighter fluid).

Then lemon oil.  Don't soak, a little goes a long way!

To keep it clean, stop playing and just sell and buy gear on Basschat!

True, and the bit about not playing it again 😋

Yes, true, but that would suggest the OP is a mucky pup and likely to make it dirty and not clean it afterwards. I would hope that we are a clean bunch in this parish
