Is this a fraud?

Recommended Posts

I saw this advert for four very nice basses on Facebook and expressed an interest in the custom shop white jazz

I then noticed that the same bass had sold on ebay recently to a buyer in Surrey.

My messenger conversation is below

She has messaged me this morning asking

“Also when can I expect payment from you ?”

Any suggestions?

It rings alarm bells, but it could be genuine.

It boils down to can you afford to lose two grand if it's a scam?

Personally I wouldn't go near it.

Ask for a photo of the lady holding the bass..? It certainly rings a few alarm bells, and that's not a 'cheap' buy, so some precautions would be sensible.

I think this is yet another con merchant - (this time on Facebook)

I won’t be paying him/her/it/whatever

If you look really closely at that image for a long time, you can eventually distinguish that its not a white Jazz bass.....

Took me about a min to realise that wasn't a bass, and another min to confirm it 😂

ETA you can do a reverse image search using Google. It might show a trail of where the "library pic" has been used before.

If you really want a £2k bass, I'd say cash on collection only; or Paypal eBay to give the protection they provide; or buy through a reputable music shop online etc.

Assuming you weren't stringing them along to see if it was a scam, I'm astounded that anyone would agree to buy a 2 grand instrument off the back of such a brief and vague correspondence.

I tend to be very pessimistic about transactions like this. As Sarah? has many valuable guitars in her listings she may be willing to share photos of her with them and band web pictures of her maybe with contact phone numbers. also Linkedin business profiles etc to build confidence. I have tracked many a seller down to social and work events and location from photos posted on media platforms to give me confidence they are who they say they are. I often did this on taking gigs from people out of the blue,  if long distance rather than turn up a postcode to find its an industrial estate and the bands out of pocket.

Definitely gareth, I’ve never done Facebook but I think it’s always good to highlight a scam

I'm pretty sure her husband emailed me once when he was commander in chief of the Nigerian army, he was wanting to share his good fortune by giving me several million US dollars in exchange for the use of my bank account...

The text is virtually identical to the original ebay listing, so that's been copied and pasted.

Ebay listing at the top, Facebook at the bottom

Nothing on her Facebook profile other than gender which is Male

And location says London, not Birmingham

And the photos for the different items have clearly been taken in different places.
