Maybe pay someone to help you with marketing.

What's funny is that it would be SO easy for a youtuber to disingenuously flatter their way into a forum's affections, racking up the clicks all the while - hello you knowledgable people, I've done this video on using intelligent modding to transform a cheap bass into something really worthwhile - do you think I've missed anything? What do you think of the pacing? I didn't want to assume people knew anything, but does it drag at all? Etc etc. But I suppose a surfeit of self-effacing modesty isn't one of the primary attributes of the average YouTubeGuRou ;)

Happy to talk basses Ricky! 👍

Totally agree. In a similar way to the OP, I attempted to add an additional revenue stream to make up for the absence of gigs. I posted a few videos (demos of effects pedals only, no talking or standard “hey guys” YouTube wittering) and it hardly got any interest or views. However, this gets loads of attention and clicks (also, YouTube views dislikes and likes as similar levels of engagement, so they aren’t even a negative!). It’s the self-perpetuating YouTube culture unfortunately!

Thanks for your advice.  Unfortunately because of COVID and my job as a professional bass player being taken away for over a year now, I don’t have the income to pay a marketer.  Online bass education is something I have been doing for a few years now, and it has been especially important to me to keep my family going over the last year.

So yes, maybe I do sometime misread a group or get my marketing off.  BUT I do think that some people are losing a bit of perspective here.  After all Basschat is fine with people posting their YouTube videos.  I have learnt over the last few years that jealousy does also come into play. The very fact that someone puts a video out on YouTube makes a particular sort of person jealous that they ether can’t or haven’t themselves.

By ‘keyboard warrior’ I mean the general sheep mentality that you sometimes find online. One person slags something off and predictably the online bullies pile in.  It’s easy to hide behind their computers and I’m not sure of the boldness that would actually happen in a real life exchange.

Anyway the post is out there, enough important opinions have been cast.  Let’s move on and if anyone wishes to chat about the contents of the video and basses in general, I would be very happy to oblige!

Dude. Quite a few folk in the forum have lost loads of work myself included. Guess what? We haven't done clickbait videos. Nor are we jealous of people who have.

People are jealous of youtubers? Well, I guess you could be of the ones who earn ludicrous amounts of money. But of your bass channel specifically? Come on. Really?

There's a reason why people don't like youtubers. It's the constant take mentality. Same with Instagram influencers. Is that not some form of entitlement?

I'm not a keyboard warrior. I make a rule to say nothing online I wouldn't say to someone's face.

I fear the more you dig in with this the worse the reactions might become in the future as most of the forum is over 45 so the demographic isn't going to warm to clickbait titled videos. Check out how much some people disliked Scott Devine's. It's the nature of the YouTube beast and it has nothing to do with finding out information. It's just clicks.

The advice has been dished out already.

Happy to talk basses with the ones that want to 👍

I've turned to YouTube more and more recently (as a viewer), there's definitely a science and an art in "being a successful YouTuber". Its difficult to put my finger on it. One aspect is (unfortunately for some....) the tone of their voice. If it grates, I'm not going to watch a video no matter how interesting. Another is, they remain true to their area of expertise, but while offering variety. Its a difficult balance to achieve. With so many more YouTubers, its 'almost' saturated out there.

Unfortunately for the OP, I've not even been persuaded to click on the video; and the suggestion to do so is awkward, because I have my evening planned out: I'm currently watching MiC, then will play computer games for a little while, then go to bed and watch some porn.

Interesting. Tell the truth now... you de-fretted it didn't you? :P Cheap bass that you wanted to make a fretless out of?

What you should have done, is reshoot the neck, refret, stone the frets, crown and polish -  and show how you can take ANY neck and make it boss (as long as the truss rod is sound, theres enough meat on the fretboard and the neck itself isn't twisted).

Oh and a new nut for good measure. Presumably you have still got the neck - so it would make for good Youtube fodder. If you learn how to do a decent fret dress, you can make your 100 quid plank play like a million dollars.

Still, if it makes you happy, job done.

Yes, when I said “the victim of a teenager’s bad craftsmanship” I meant me!  Quite happy to admit to this 😃

I think you missed me talking about that earlier in the thread.  Don’t blame you, as you have to wade through quite a few pages to get there.

Anyway, yes my handiwork I’m afraid.  After stumbling across this bloke called Jaco on a cassette called ‘Heavy Weather’, back in the early 90’s, I decided to ‘modify’ my bass.  Big mistake but we live and learn don’t we!

Anyway I am glad I kept my original bass as it certainly has a new lease of life now. A quite badly build Encore bass now plays John Deacon bass lines in Stadiums and Arenas (with the customary COVID break of course!).

Is that a flex? That's a flex, right?

Yeah, attempted flex.

I’ll even talk basses with sheep or jealous people.  All are welcome here to talk about basses! 😀

Now we've got to the point when the OP (who's 400+ posts are almost exclusively related to the self-promotion of his youtube channel) kinda gives @ped a choice of insults and welcomes him to the forum to talk about basses, the forum he co-owns and runs to let himself and other people talk about basses.... this thread is weird.

Nah, just what I do for a job (in normal times anyway).  Now back to basses...

Nah, it's a flex.

You've come onto a bass forum, had your post ripped to shreds and attempt to elevate yourself by talking of the venue sizes that you are reputedly playing at.

Flex.

If it wasn't a flex, you wouldn't need to state such things.

You do know that anybody can google your name, and derive the required to raise an eyebrow?

Anyway...
