Extraordinary bassist. . . . Sharay Reed

Matters of taste and all. It's pretty interesting how people have so different reactions to different genres: to me, most music outside jazz, fusion, and modern gospel is too stiff and I don't wanna hear it.  and I want to whine about it. To contribute, here's Sharay playing improv and making a couple of fat mistakes:

Well alright not widdling exactly but Reed as a leader in the current crop of young talent is just off the scale good, and I mean that in a musical way not just a 'Im fast look at me kinda way'.

His lines are always melodic and musical. No matter how busy he gets, like Jamerson, he's always supporting the song.

And you might want to take into account the different esthetics in different genres! I wouldn't play gospel runs over an Irish folk tune or a tango -- that'd be grievous bassily harm (aka overplaying) and the Crown will have words about it. But there's something about the oversaturation and over the top runs on top of runs on top of runs that you have in gospel jams, it's like having way too much of a good thing and you just laugh at the impossibility, and it still works somehow

I guess like a lot of people this was my first introduction to him

That lick at 2.05... The genre leaves me cold but damn...

I loved this post from AxelF

Just look at all those bass Apostles sat round the pit, taking it all in, beautiful.

Still his finest moment,  all that theory training is being put to work.

I love Sharray Reed but he is a session guy. Mono Neon blows him away for playing the bass he plays on this alone. He's a much more exciting bassist. And he plays his bass upside down.

Seriously? Your contributions on here suggest that you're much better than this reductionist nonsense (and that's no slight on Mono Neon)...

TBH, I find it more interesting to compare him and Justin Raines. Same generation, very different players
Justin's just so exuberant!

Well we're all going to hold our own opinions but when that boy was in the pocket live, he was letting it all hang out.  In the studio he seems a little more reserved.

Speaking of balancing restraint vs expression.  This guy is chill but his fingers are doing the talking.
