How come The Beatles are rarely ever played on the radio?

Recommended Posts

I've spent a lifetime listening to and studying the Beatles. As a teen in the 70's I hated them and then as I got older started to appreciate their genius but even today there is something about their "thing" which just seems old and kind of hokey despite the tunes being brilliant.....in a way that doesn't fit, wonder if that's why there not played much. Id even go so far to say that Motown stuff has the same problem.

Any love on here for 6 Music? I sometimes listen at home, but as most of my radio time is spent on the road, my old FM car radio won’t do it. Suppose I should get a DAB unit really. There are some good things on 6, particularly Radcliffe and Maconie for me.

Yes. Listen to it a fair bit, probably more than any other station.

If I remember correctly they played Tomorrow Never Knows at breakfast time the other day - so that's not bad going!

Generally I don't listen to radio, most DJs irritate me more than if fibreglass loft insulation got stuck in my underpants. (Someone mentioned TalkRadio, I'd rather ram a carving knife through my temple than listen to that).

The only time I listen to radio is the small amount of time I'm in the works van, and that'll be Absolute Radio, which is meh at best. They tend to play the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin more than the Beatles, but mostly it's late 80s onwards.

I have 6 on most of the day.

Tomorrow Never Knows is how the Beatles invented the Chemical Brothers!

How come The Beatles are rarely ever played on the radio..?

It's true, it's been a while. Maybe it's because of Green concerns about pesticides..? o.O

The Archers

Joe's dropping big hints about what he'd like for Christmas. Ed reminds him that times are lean. Joe's heard there's a possible job going at Lower Loxley, organising the decoration-making in the Cruck Barn. Joe reckons it's a real business opportunity.

Adam's impressed with Will's plans for putting beetle banks on the Estate, and will do what he can. Adam's pleased that diverting the footpath has finally been agreed, so he can get on with the polytunnel extension.

Joe and Helen laugh at the embarrassing pictures of Mike that have appeared all over the place. Joe remarks that Vicky's good fun. Will praises Helen on her babysitting skills, but Helen's not keen to hear that the kids can't wait for her to do it again.
Joe mentions to Will that Caroline was impressed with the pheasant casserole Ed and Emma cooked. Assuming Ed must have poached them, Will angrily storms off to confront him. As soon as he's got proof he's going straight to the police.

Leon cooks a candle-lit meal for Helen. She tentatively suggests introducing him to her parents. Leon's really not keen. They'll have to arrange a time when he's less busy.

I listen to college radio. I need new music I have heard the other stuff. Incidently "Classic Rock" stations here in the States play the Beatles. But as with all the other "Classic Rockers" they play thesamethreesongs over&over&...No deep cuts, HITS. So the station can sell advertisement time. To the population that spends money. On cars.

this is probably it, most stations are playing 80's onwards stuff in their pursuit of yoof, I'm of an age that grew up with the Beatles and listen to very little radio these days, with the exception of Gold I don't know of any stations that cater, musically, for the over 60's

Ey - up,  I'm apparently over sixty,   and we have R2 on at work,  yep,  hadn't realised they had vanished off the 'air'  til this thread.  Saxon have just done an album of covers,  including "Paperback Writer", would they need permission to record that after all this time ?,   but if your a fan of Ford Escorts from the 70's,  check out the vid for their single, Speed  King.

After my wife died I sat down with my eldest daughter and played Beatles to show her how the Fab 4 changed everything. I have always thought that Rubber Soul  and especially Revolver were more groundbreaking than Sgt Pepper and so chose Tomorrow Never Knows as an example. Her initial thoughts (we were more than a little tipsy by now) were that the Beatles copied the Chemical Brothers but as she started to say it,  I saw the realisation on her face. NeedLess to say  all my grandkids now love the .

As for the lack or Beatles on the radio. It is many of the things noted above, plus what pigeon hole do you put the Beatles in? Pop, Rock, Soul, Rock and Roll, Progressive, Country. There is another question here but ot warrants another thread.

You don't need permission to record anything that has already been released by another artist. The only way it can be prevented is if the writer objects to the version on the grounds that it is "derogatory", but that can be quite hard to prove. Most writers are perfectly happy to take the performance royalties on cover versions.

To be fair the Chemical Brothers are quoted as describing Tomorrow Never Knows as being their manifesto. Its not something they deny or are ashamed of.

Beatles songs are more expensive to play for radio station as they have a higher royalty percentage. It's down to pure greed of the copyright holders. Same with 60s compilations CDs, you never see Beatles tracks on them (no Rolling Stones too) because once again, the license to use them is high and they are 'ring-fenced' by different permissions of use and publication.

I don't know but it maybe some kind of commercial strategy on the part of whoever controls the play rights to Beatles music.

Firstly they definitely don't need the public exposure on radio and although radio plays do attract a fee: there maybe a real but intangible cost to this to the artist.

Obviously if people regularly hear a well known song/s on radio they maybe less likely to actually buy the music.

For instance I would never buy the Eagles 'Hotel California' when it's on everyday on radio 2/Absolute.

With regard to radio play this is completely and utterly wrong.

I was going to say that 50 - 60 years on from when The Beatles were happening; there has been plenty of other music released for radio stations to choose for their playlists.

But that can't be right, as there are so many other songs from the last 50-60 years that radio stations still play to death (yawn) even though those songs must be included on most pop/rock compilation albums ever released and therefore widely included in most listeners' music record/CD/download collections.🤐

Anyone who thinks the Beatles are no longer in Vogue because of the lack of radio airplay, should take a trip to the fine city of Liverpool, and you will inevitably notice the long queue outside the Beatles Story and other Beatles related attractions the place is buzzing (before Covid),with mostly Americans looking for nostalgia. Most Radio stations have a playlist committee who tend to be from the more younger demographic, who ultimately answer to the producer, who has the final say oh and by the way, there are plenty of the younger Gens in that queue.
