I have been ripped off (by Mick Mason of Leicester - Facebook scammer/thief)

I arranged to buy a Sansamp pedal on Facebook Marketplace and it didn't arrive, despite vague assurances that his daughter had sent it and that he would try a mate who works for Yodel.

The seller is called Mick Mason (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010826582679)(https://uk.linkedin.com/in/mick-mason-344b21104), and he plays in a tribute band called Everything Changes (Take That), who seem to be quite successful.

I paid him on Nov 20th, which is coming up to a month ago, so I'm concerned that I've been ripped off for my £100.

Does anybody know this person or have you had dealings with him?

UPDATE: I HAVE NOW RECEIVED MY REFUND.

A detailed overview of the scam and some relevant information for those of you just joining us will be added in due course.

Here's a picture of Mick to start things off. More to follow tomorrow.

Details of a previous case where Mick scammed pensioners and families out of money saved for holidays. A suspended sentence was all he received, although we hope that'll be un-suspended asap https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/local-news/single-mum-pensioners-ingoldmells-caravan-3743529

No - he never gave me tracking.

He said he sent it, then he said he'd had other things go missing, then he said it was returned to him, then he said he'd send it again.

This was listed (again?) on FB Marketplace 22 hours ago for £110.

(Not accusing anyone of any wrongdoing just for your reference.)

@prowla I remember reading a very similar story on Facebook Marketplace a few weeks back - not sure if it was you who posted it but all the details are the same (saying he sent the item, no evidence, claiming his daughter sent it etc)

If it wasn’t you then it would seem that this guy is a definite chancer as he’s clearly feeding the exact same story to multiple buyers!

Personally I would never, ever pay for anything by bank transfer unless I can see the item in person. You have very little chance of ever getting the money back. I’ve never bought anything from here via bank transfer and never will - and this is relatively trustworthy. There are just too many chancers and scam artists around. This seller may not be dodgy but once you’ve sent the money via bank transfer the seller has zero incentive to actually send the goods. I use PayPal as goods and add a bit on top so the seller gets the agreed sale price. I’m aware there are lots of scammers that can say not received or damaged etc but at least it balances the risk a little more between buyer and seller. I guess speaking to them on the phone to gauge whether they’re sound helps, but you can never really tell.

Hmmm - he's got 3 SansAmp items up.

Items in Leicester.

Seems like he's currently under a suspended sentence from January for the caravan thing, so contacting the police might activate that.

I'm sorry to hear you may have lost money to this fraudster (or be waiting a long time for compensation).

He needs to be stopped ASAP though. 🙁

Facebook Marketplace. Complete free for all - some great folks but millions of complete wasters.

“pay peanuts, get monkeys”

Since introducing a fee to sell here I can count the number of problem sellers on one hand.

Only use PayPal, NEVER gift, unless you’re giving an actual gift.

I think of scammers as faceless untraceable characters but an actual bloke I have mutual fb friends with makes my blood boil

Thing is that because it’s free to list there’s often very little effort or commitment from the sellers. There’s a whole host of problems from people not marking things sold and being difficult to speak to (when they can string a sentence together) to full on scammers.

Obviously some people are great, but there’s no filter. A bit like Gumtree. OK if you’re careful but not every bass player is a team player like we get used to on BC.

I’m not excusing the guy, it’s awful ripping people off, it looks - at least according to the newspaper- that he’s got a gambling problem. Whilst I have bought things off here by bank transfer, there’s no way I would for an item on Facebook, unless I did actually know them.

I hope you get your money back.
