Songs *about* bass players...?

Highly unlikely. Hey Joe was written late 50s, very probably in Scotland. Joe Osborne started out professionally in 61 with Ricky Nelson. Can't see how he could have been the guilty party!

True, there's a distinct lack of murders and fleeing to Mexico in Osborn's biographies, which makes me think it may not have been him!

I can't imagine "You're so vain" being about a bass player.

Tenuous link time.

The famous badabump, badabump, badabump bass intro was in fact played by Klaus Voormann who also played bass on 'How Do You Sleep' in the OP.

He also designed the cover of the Beatles Album 'Revolver' a few years earlier.

And probably on the strength of that Höfner commissioned him to paint the artwork for a few limited edition violin basses. Nice, but very, very expensive.

Jethro Tull's first three albums all featured songs referring to their bass player to be, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond.

Song For Jeffrey (on This Was)

Jeffrey Goes To Leicester Square (on Stand Up)

Inside (on Benefit)

‘Murder One’ - written by Metallica about Lemmy.

Wasn’t Motörhead, by Lemmy, pretty much written about himself?

Ironic then that he played that 1965 Fender Precision (That he painted himself) and not a Hofner.
