Status necks on stingrays

Hey Tom, generally sticking a Status neck on an MM is a game changer in terms of balance string to string, clarity, sustain and in some cases tonal quality. Whether you like those changes over the characteristics of a wooden neck is another question entirely! It's a more expensive version of replacing a BBOT bridge with a Badass, some basses sound different (not always better), some much the same. The graphite necks themselves can also be marmite, I love both Status and modulus necks, but to my mind you simply cannot beat a lovely played-in bit of maple :)

One way in which they are undoubtedly superior to wooden necks is that they are stable in terms of temperature and humidity; if you play a low action and move from place to place a lot, that makes a very big difference. This comes at the cost however of their being more challenging to install; personally I'd always get it done by a professional.

Adjustable truss rod, I think yes. Board, much like a good piece of ebony to play. Headstock, graphite.

If you're looking at that Black 'Ray. Yes, go for it :)

The honourable Mr. Green and his forces can also tint the neck, and satin finish is possible... I like the no-dots-in-the-front, which is one more option in the list. In the order phase I was thinking about the price a bit, but I received something special from the team. And lady Dawn personally called me to tell, that the neck was ready to be sent. Although there were extra options, the neck came earlier than expected. Talk about customer experience...

Most of all I love the stability of the neck. It is there no matter what weather. The truss rod does exist, but there is no need to touch it at all.

2nd worst website I've seen this year - that you can't link to a page just the frame - thanks for the link though! Suddenly thinking about this for a build...

I've always thought that, even when I first looked at the website years ago it seemed poor.

Weird for a company that specialises in cutting edge graphite basses has a crap website, wonder if you could trade them a new Web design for a bass 😁

It did cross my mind!  But then the commercial side of me reminded myself that a decent e-commerce website always costs more than a bass - even a really nice one!

The big thing for them is that it kills their search - putting the info in an iframe effectively seals it off from google as there is no direct link to the necks page. I work on websites all day long, consider myself a digital native, and I thought they didn't make separate necks anymore becasue I couldn't find them on google - should have just asked here!

If I’m ever interested in finding out info about what a manufacturer produces I always go straight to the website. If that doesn’t work I usually email them.

I always find it a bit strange when people ask on forums without even looking on the manufacturers site.

I think by asking here people are looking for the type of information that you don't find on manufacturer's websites :)

I wasn’t thinking specifically about this thread - although it could equally apply here - but I’ve seen loads of threads on here where a simple look at the manufacturer’s website - or at worst an email to the manufacturer - would have answered the question being asked. I’ve even pointed it out on occasion to be met with “oh, never thought of that”. Baffling.

Thanks for the info, I did find the website but was just looking for more info and peoples experience with them too. I was looking at the black Ray but I left it too long as usual. :(

Interesting to note but they do 2 pseudo maple boards now, also the ray necks are over £400 with the vat.

Are they much harder to fit than wood?

Only that you need to choose the correct drill size definitely, use a pillar drill and not a hand drill.

Use a masonry bit not a wood one, counter sink the hole so it doesn’t crack screwing.

Measure many times, drill once.

Dont be daunted tho, first ever neck I sized and drilled was graphite and it was fine!

Years ago I had a trans teal 2EQ StingRay and put one of the Status necks on it. Stepdad drilled out the holes for the neck pocket and the MM tuners on a pillar drill at his factory with me in nervous attendance.

One of, if not the best mod for a Fender style bass imo. Whole bass gained a feel of being extra solid, notes rung out and there were no issues with the action once set. Only thing I couldn’t get on with was at gig volume even just putting your left hand on the neck between songs was really loud and noticeable and almost felt like it could spiral out of control if the volume wasn’t rolled right back lol.

I sold mine for £700 (sold the wood MM neck separately). Now seeing this one for sale on here has got me thinking on repeating the experience.

Yep, it's truly terrible - but now I really want to know the number 1 worst website you've seen this year!

I really don't need to put a graphite neck on any of my basses, but this thread has got me tempted...
