Advice sought: stripping a poly body, then oil finish

Recommended Posts

I've got this Jazz body from a 2019 Fender American Pro that I'd like to take down to the bare wood then give the body an oil finish. It's a sunburst so I'm pretty confident that the wood will be presentable (though I'm not that fussed).

Would Nitromors be suitable for stripping the current finish? If not, what would you suggest?

Once it has been stripped, I'd like to give it an oil finish (when I played guitar I fell in love with the Washburn N4 and, in large part, that was down to the finish of the body). What oil would be good for this? I'm sure that successive coats will cause a certain amount of colouration over time, but I'm not looking to stain it, if you get my meaning.

Any gotchas I should look out for as I do this?

As I think it’s a poly finish, I don’t think Nitromors will touch it sadly. Prepare yourself for an awful lot of sanding.

Did a cheap Cruiser by Crafter P-a-like...

Heat Gun... orbital sander... then £5 Dutch Oil from screw fix... applied 'slurry method' with 800 grade wet n dry...

Couple of posts here...

Never look into a heat gun - you’ll burn your brows off and probably your face too

I would agree with Paul, I’ve stripped a few using the heat gun that I had refinished and I found it pretty easy once you get going, I did burn the surface slightly when I first tried it but it easily sanded out 🙂

If the wood is nice, I would use Crimson's Guitar Finishing Oil. Danish is OK I used it on a neck recently but it took months to harden properly and lose its tackyness.

I just bought a second hand ash body that had been finished with gun stock oil, a bottle kindly came with. After heavily modding it to reduce the weight I used said oil, 2 coats was fine for me. Dried quickly.
