John Peel Resource

There has been mention of Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror etc already in this thread.... and there was a great 3 (I think) CD compilation (on Strange Fruit if I remember correctly) of all those sessions from them and a few others which is one of my fave Peel outputs.

Wow!.... what the the band and song?

The band was called Inter and the song was called Happy Ending. I've found John Peel playing it on YouTube 😁

I've also found our second John Peel session from 1999 that somebody has put together and uploaded.

Great stuff!

Bit of a trip down memory lane to hear Peel talk about the faxes he is receiving!

Have any other Basschatters done a Peel session? Don't be shy!

I wrote a book on Peel. Fortunately his manager, the recently deceased Clive Selwood, liked it, which cemented a nice friendship.

Had to get help from specialist fellow writers to assess the different decades, as none of us had the expertise to cover everything. In my mind that says it all about Peel...he really was unique.

My faves The Fall did more sessions for Peel than any other artist - 24 by the end.

Every song from every session was released on a 6 CD compliation shortly after John's untimely death.

He often said that one of his great hopes was for all the Fall sessions to be relased together.... and for a long while that did not look hopeful.... but eventually yes it did happen! I think it was approved before his death though.

Here is a particualrly good song (might not appeal to everybody!) from a early (1978) Peel session - "Mess of My" - they never recorded/released the song apart from the session.

Great... I'll give that equal points as for recording a session ;)!

What an amazing resource. Is this going to stay up? Slits '77, fantastic.

Peel was such a part of my teens through the 70s, and informed my musical landscape, but I found him more and more irritating as he implemented his brand of taste control over the years. I continued loving rock, prog, & jazz when punk & new wave came along, he just rejected anything if it wasn't done in a shed that morning, or it was the Undertones 😉

Thanks for sharing.

An indie type band I was in submitted a couple of tapes to JP but were rejected as we didn't have a shed to record in but had to make do with the outside khazi round the back of my mate's nan's house
