£6 for a set of 6 string bass strings... how terrible will they be?

Well, they arrived!

I'm not sure on what's going on with the labels...

E-6, B-5, E-4th, A-3rd, D-2hd (yes, 2hd, not 2nd), G-1st...

They 'look' reasonable in terms of how they've been wound and ends wrapped.

£6, I mean even if they string a bass for 2 weeks then I'll be impressed!

Sussed it

B5, E4,A3,D2,G1

Are meant for a 5-stringer.

Rather then make up 6-string bags, they just used the E6 from a guitar set.

Low B goes in the E6 bag and the others all shuffle along one so the numbers are right.

The could have put the high C in the E6 bag, but then the numbers would be wrong.

Did you work at Bletchley Park?

I'd never have figured that out. 😂

Yeah, I did gather that much! 😂

Love the 2hd though...

I bought a £4.00 four-string set branded as 'Soldier' primarily for the purpose of putting them on a mate's bass during a full set up; they were going to be on and off a few times, so just needed something cheap.

They were in the same packaging as the OPs and were really pretty good.  My mate doesn't play much bass, but I know they're still on his Jazz a couple of years later.

That's it, I remember, the packaging was the same as the two sets of Fame strings I bought many many many many many many many many moons ago.

The 4 strings set was quite decent (I mean dead after a few hours, just like the Rotosound's RS66), the fiver was awful. Go figure why...

Maybe 2hd stands for second hand ? 😁

I used to have a trade account with Warwick (when I was making guitar amps) and I was doing a lot of testing of my amps. I changed strings a lot, I had a lot of guitars to work with. The nickel wound 10-46 gauge used to retail about 3 quid. They were fine actually. I also used their nickel wound bass strings. 45-105. I think they were a tenner. Never had a dud string in all the sets. I may even have a set or two left over, but I switched back to rotosound about 10 years ago

You must be referring to Warwick Red bass strings.

You could get them for under a tenner a year or two ago and they were really very good.

Price seems to have crept up recently though. :(

They were definately Framus branded strings. They were cheaper than the warwick reds at the time IIRC. Probably the same strings. They were fine

If they are better than Watney's Red Label I might give them a try...

No matter how bad the assorted beverages of Watney Combe & Reid may have been, they could never be as dreadful as my experiences with  some Warwick Strings (Reds and EMPs)

Yellows are alright.

As for the £6 six sets, are the gauges as arbitrary as the lettering on the packaging?
