Ashdown Little Bastard settings

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I have an Ashdown Little Bastard 30w valve head that I am trying to pair with an Aguilar DB112 for home studio work and was wondering about what other LB users settings are.

The EQ is still a mystery to me as I my main amp for years has been a Markbass Little Rocker 500 and that thing is really easy to dial in when compared to the LB.

I have had a look over here and on Talkbass for the "flat" settings but there does not seem to be a general rule of thumb.

For reference I use a variety of passive P and J basses with and without effects and I tend to look for a tone that has a hint of growl if you dig in with a pick but is stil fat and punchy when playing finger-style.

All suggestions are welcome!

Cheers!

I normally run my LB through a single Barefaced One10 at home, these settings work quite nicely, but plug into the “low” input to hit the preamp harder :)

I spoke with Ashdown about various details of my CTM-30, and apparently the closest to flat is bass and treble at 50%, mids at 75%.

Interesting, I was told mids to the max, treble and bass at 9pm, with mid and bright switches down and bass switch up.

These are the settings I use for reggae and dub, through a markbass NY115 or an Ashdown 115 deep cab , and I always use the low input

Yes!

How peculiar. I'd started by asking if it was the usual passive appx. 0-10-0, but was given the percentages stated.

I have a software scope on an old computer just to see if it works. I need a new machine for music use, but I should put it on my current one and add a test of the LB/CTM EQ to the list of nerdy stuff I want to do with it! 😄

@Byo if I may suggest (if you haven’t already) give Dave green a call at Ashdown, he designed and built the LB , I’ve met him many times and he will tell you anything you want to know about it, mine is number 00046, he took mine apart and cleaned and serviced it and checked the valves and  upgraded a few bits , while I waited , they really are top guys at Ashdown 🙂

I know!  And this article in Bass Gear Mag shows "flat" as different again.

Yep, Dave is great, a really helpful guy, as are Ashdown in general.

Intriguing- that is my kind of review though! I suppose it would be, being the kind of guy to have a scope on his computer!

I have a CTM 30 tweed (same beast really) and I tend to start here, then tweak down a touch as required (usually not required 😂)

Very cool sub octave and drive pedal...just not my cup of tea.  It's been around the block, but works absolutely fine.
Royal Mail with tracking (if required) or PayPal will be extra.

      Hi all
I'm selling my Ashdown ABM400H head unit. This is a very early model from Ashdown's history, and was originally a rack mounted head, but the rack ears are now missing. I've had the amp for about 10 years, and I used it with a home-built bass cab, both of which I obtained from another forum user. It's a great little amp, I used it at many practices over a period of years, but unfortunately, much like the SWR, it has sat unused for a number of years now in the spare room.
It features a valve preamp, with post-preamp DI on the face, an effects loop on the back. Delivering 400 Watts of warm bass, middy-burbles, and clear highs. The EQ on the front really couldn't offer much more in the way of allowing you to dial in whatever sound you like, effectively having high and low pass filters, with the frequency-specific faders, and a 3-band EQ. Unfortunately I can't offer a demo for this one, but I'm more than happy to have the performance of the amp validated by a professional prior to completion of sale.
The case and carry strap will be included with the sale, however it seems the kettle lead is no longer in the box. I can seek to get one prior to completion of sale too at your request.

Selling my full Ashdown bass rig, well used over the years but a great sounding solid bass rig! Had regular services and maintenance to keep it in shipshape!

As per the title, I guess!
I've a Warwick Fortress Masterman 5. It has the MEC active twin Jazz (also used in the Infinity, Dolphin & Vampyre at the very least)
In this application, it has a Volume & Pan (stacked) , and a Bass/Treble (also stacked) for EACH coil.
As far as I'm aware, the MEC active 2-band won't run at 18v, so series connection of two 9v batteries is out.
There's enough room for 2 9v blocks in the cavity if I remove the original single holder. I'm sure I can improvise something that'll hold a pair.
What am I trying to achieve? A bit more headroom, I think. It can all sound a bit compressed sometimes. Battery life is ok. I don't need to double it!
Does series connection double the voltage and parallel double the  available current?
Anyone with a bit of knowledge, feel free to chime in!
      Thanks in advance,
      Alex.

Decided to part with this lovely little valve head. I'm a bit sad, but I always said 3 amps are too many and I need to fund a five string.
Fantastic heads. Great valve tone that breaks up nicely to a lovely valve grit when cranked without disemboweling you. This is in almost new condition. Has the tiniest scuff which I have pictured, but otherwise like new. Also has a snazzy matching Roqsolid cover.
Really would like pick up. Could drop off if within reasonable distance. Really don't want to post just in case it gets ruined.
      Cheers!
