Recording vocals through Zoom B3

Essentially has anyone tried this?

Like many we are doing some recording as we can't play face to face. I don't own a separate audio interface so have been using my Zoom B3 into Audacity for bass and sending the WAV file to our guitarist to mix and this has been working well so far. Also using the Zoom in the fx loop so I can get my amps pre amp tone sounded pretty good.

I've now been asked to record some BVs (not my stongest suit anyway) but all I have is the Zoom B3 and an AKG D5 mic. Will this do a job with the possible addition of a pop screen or would I need a proper audio interface?

Cheers for any help.

Your Zoom doesn't have the necessary socket, nor pre-amp, for plugging the mic into, so that's out. If you've any other mic, such as a webcam, you could try that straight into Audacity; it might be good enough for BV..? If not, it's down to the shops onto t'web for an audio interface. Always useful anyway, so not a waste.
Hope this helps. B|

A simple plug adaptor won't do the job, unfortunately, as the Zoom input is not pre-amped for a mic. If there's one 'on hand' it's worth a try, but the results are more than likely to be less convincing than a webcam. No, an audio interface with a mic pre-amp is the way to go, if the webcam doesn't cut the mustard. :friends:

If you have an xlr to jack I'd definitely be tempted to have a play around, it'll cost nothing to try. There are preamp type things in there, with some nice reverbs available too... It's entirely possible that with an hours plating you could fluke a result.

i used to do it with my digitec RP1 many moons ago and had some awesome results as the reverbs were so good on that old thing, hence why I thought it might be worth a try ;)

so looking at some more info, it would appear that the original B3 could be used as a 2 in/out audio interface but the newer B3n dropped that feature. If that's true that's a mahoosive deal breaker for the newer version IMO, I'd love to see some video of the older B3 used as a Audio Interface but I can't find any.

OK, so I've had a play today as I  had a bass part to record. Used the bassman sim which sounded cool to me with my G&L JB.  also plugged my mic in through a an xlr to jack cable and dabbled through a few of the pre amps which are needed and the output is very low otherwise. I found the DI+ worked best but could do with a built in auto tune for my voice! I'm sure a proper singer would have other views but I can see it woking for what I need. Will post some clips when I've got them sorted.
