I've been using Swr amps & cabs now for nigh on 15 yrs, its all i've ever wanted & all i've ever needed enough said. BassBod Posted April 21, 2009 Share Posted April 21, 2009 Well spotted on the Mr Tone controls - a fairly recent addition from our very own Walbassist (a man of taste...and a few splendid basses). It seems to be most useful as a high pass filter, to keep the rumbles away on loud gigs. Not that I'm doing many loud ones at the mo... It really is a dream eq - dead quiet but powerful and extremely accurate. It could easily take you a whole soundcheck to disappear up your own rear port...if you let it. Can also be used as a standalone rig. [attachment=24229:Swrbbb_1.jpg] Some seem to forget back in the late 80's early nineties Swr was one of the few manufacturers making small lightweight bass cabs. JTUK Posted January 8, 2010 Share Posted January 8, 2010 With regards to SM400's...go easy on the bass. I never have mine over half as that sub just isn't useable at all. You can get plenty of thump without it.. and I think they got that feature wrong the 1st time round and had to correct it with later models The 4 stage/band para is great...and again might be overkill. I am currently running all basses flat from the amp as the basses have enough EQ on them anyway. Never been happier with that amp. Would I add a SM900....hmmm..?? I always though I would like that..but atm, no need. The SM400 is light enough outside a rack at 18 lbs, IIRC.. Always rated the Goli model of cabs... those cabs take some beating and there is no excuse for these being boomy...IMO.... and....... my amp tech likes them as he says they are built well, but in 18 yrs or so, the only time it (SM 400 ) let me down was when it was crashed down onto the stage under power ..it complained about that but was quickly sorted. BassBod Posted September 30, 2013 Share Posted September 30, 2013 One of the reasons I like mine is that they are older, well known technology. Fairly easy to get repaired when necessary and don't appear to need much in the way of specialist parts. That will change over time, and they seem to be closed for business now..but they are not in the "disposable"if anything goes wrong class. They've got issues - heat build up can be frightening, noisy fans, the extreme low end can kill speakers, exact replacement speakers probably aren't made these days, the tweeters fry (if you turn them on and use them) the aluminium fronts can bend (done that too) they are stoneage heavy etc etc But overall, I've found them to be very well built, reliable and good sounding designs.
