Any chance you can take a close, clear, well-lit pic of the "number" just for the sake of the elimination of doubt? I've upscaled/enhanced as best I can and it certainly looks like an MIJ Fender s/n to me.

No, they're numbers, and they'll tell you pretty much all you need to know about the bass if you take the time to look at them and then spend about 3 minutes on Google

Totally agree, suspect the neck plate also . Mine On the jb62 was plain 

the pick guard shouldn’t have that truss rod cutout, or be black 

just remembered I had this p bass model exactly too (briefly) - it had a white scratch plate for sure and a plain neck plate.

Perhaps it changed after my jazz was made (in 86/87 IIRC). Don’t recall the p bass year but it was definitely plain plate
