For that price I'm surprised it has a veneer top. At least it looks like a veneer from the edge photos.

It's actually cheaper than the solid colour ones, they're up for £900+ preorder. Seems to be a very high price in my mind, near enough putting themselves against the Fender American Performer range.

I'm unsure why an exotic top on a bass is an issue? It's common practice to put a figured top on a ash/mahogany body isn't it?

Yes, the top end Schecters and ESP Ltd basses (Korean) are quite close to some Fenders in price, but in my humble opinion you often get quite a lot of instrument for the price. I like it because its different to the standard.

I think the only issue is you wont get the resale you might get on a Fender. But if you buy them as well made, good sounding solid workhorses...you cant go wrong.

My 330 quid Schecter is at least as high quality as any Fender I've played so I'd be surprised if a higher end Schecter wasn't better than an American Performer.

I think across the range, the American Performer spot is the worst value Fender instruments. Its existence is based on a common delusion where a lot of people think "made in America" is a plus point. So the instruments cost more because of the labour costs but aren't actually any better than they'd be if they were made in Mexico or Asia.

The Professional and up also have higher labour costs but at least they are also higher spec than the lower cost Fender models.
