Bassman Fender

I have the chance to by a Fender Bassman 100. The head has been in a house for 20 years. The cab in a shed. I know i will have to get the head serviced for new bad soldering and probably tubes. Does anyone know what a fair price would be? It was made in 1976

I paid £300 for my 135 a few years back.. It was in good shape generally and had a once over from a tech before I had it. I replaced the mis-matched output valves with JJ 6L6s plus I later replaced the pre-amp ones too..

I know I got a good deal for mine but consider the potential work needed on your prospective 100. They're pretty tough old things and generally easy to fix if there is an issue.. 😀

Impossible to say what might be a fair price. Depends on condition, etc. A full set of valves will not be cheap. If a transformer is u/s, that will be an expensive fix. Are you being asked to make an offer? If the cab has been in a shed for 20 years, the drivers will likely have got damp, so could need replacement, too. Would you be able to get it from the seller and take it to a tech' for an informed opinion before agreeing to buy or making an offer?

Just to nit pick a bit but the tubes you installed would have been 6L6GCs. Had you installed 6L6s they would have failed almost instantly. When talking tubes the letters are important. :)

The 7027A is essentially a 6L6GC on steroids.  The problem that has appeared with the demise of many tube/valve manufacturers is that you're never really sure what characteristics the device had been built to.

Thanks for all the replies. As with the virus, things went a bit quiet. I haven`t had chance to see the cab in the shed, but sent me photos of the head. I don`t know if anyone knows if the tubes are gone by looking at it though. I have seen about £200 for the valves.

The 6L6 far right as you look at the pic has lost its vacuum.  The white top gives it away.  The one next to it looks like a Zerox?  Either way that head will defo need a new set of 6L6GC's.  My peavey has 6 of them in it and ive been happy with the JJ's so far, I bought from Hotrox as they tend to be cheapest without skipping on proper testing etc, should be about £120 for the power valves, not sure whats in the pre-amp of these tho.

Id say all in you need to budget around £200/£250 for new valves and a tech to service it (plus any other parts he/she may come across)

Didn't Chris use that 100 with Yes ? With inverted 412 Fender cabinet ? He also had a Marshall 100 head on a Sunn 612 when he played Birmingham, Huntsville, and Atlanta. The sound man had him cranked up plenty !! (my Bassman was a humble 50 ) This head sounded good , but a 100 Ampeg V4 was more good.
