So the 2020 abstinence worked well for me then, not 2 weeks in and another new bass. But in my defence I am going to be selling 4 basses and 1 guitar, so I’m not feeling too guilty,

Anyway, said bass, although I have a Squier VM77 that is great I wanted a US Jazz and saw this advertised on the bay so took a punt. Neck is slim as with Jazz basses, tall frets apparently though I don’t notice them being any different if I’m honest. Added a Hipshot Extender and A-string thingy, plus a black pickguard. I did quite like the minty green stock one but OCD dictates black to match my other instruments.

Plays like a dream, sounds great with good difference between the two pickups. The slim neck means I’m playing with a much lighter fretting hand. Was strung with Ernie Ball Super Slinkies - that’s now two basses I’ve bought with these on and have to say I like them.

So I now have the classic three, Precision, Jazz & Stingray, all in black/black/maple, plus one of those skinny stringed things (a Fender Tele 72 Deluxe).

So, not said much about this one since I got it, so here goes. It’s the bass that I’ve found works best for the style of music I’m playing at the moment - Zeppelin, Rainbow, Purple, Classic rock really. I’ve strung it with nickel Elixirs and it just fits the sound so well. Given that we have both guitar and keys, the less bulky sound of the Jazz compared to my usual Precision just slots into the right place, plus the slimmer neck than I’m used to is much easier to get around on for those complex riffs. I’m quite surprised but also rather pleased that I’ve finally found a band/project where a Jazz is the best bass, I kind-of feel like a grown up now, if that makes any sense.

I'm going the other way.

After years of being a Jazz Bass guy, the Precision sound lays a very solid foundation for all my 3 bands.

I bought a P bass for my country band and it sounded excellent. I then bought an Elite P/J and then introduced it to my blues/rock band and my classic rock band too. It really does the job.

The Jazzes are gathering dust at the moment.

Exactly the same here. Jazz player for a very long time, joined a Britpop covers band just after Christmas and it was apparent immediately that the J wasn’t right. My P however sounds great and suits the material perfectly. I haven’t touched the Js in months.

Just solo the neck pickup and you don’t need to buy another bass!!

Ye gods, what am I saying?!

I agree. Much as I wanted the J to sound like a P, it just doesn't to my ears no matter what I do.

I have EMGs and the BQC eq system in my j type (Sandberg) and reducing the bass and boosting the mids at the lower end of the freq pot gets really close.

Still not perfect, but good enough in a mix.

A thing of beauty.

Best colour option too!
