When I  first picked up a Bass back in 83  I promised my self that I would learn Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke, well after a 35 years abstinence ,I was still promising   myself I would learn Sir Duke, and so after 3 or 4 years  I still haven't managed to learn Sir Duke.? any tips anyone.

Yes. Slow it down to half-speed (or less, if need be...), and learn to play it at that speed, following either the notes on the stave, the TAB or the audio, depending on the medium used. Once you're really comfortable at that tempo (and not before...), increase by a bit (50% becomes 60%, for instance...) and get it down 'pat' again. Increase again, and repeat until 110% is reached. You should by then be perfectly at ease playing it at tempo. Hope this helps; it's a good bass line to learn, and so well worth the work put in, which will serve for many more tunes. Good luck with it. :rWNVV2D:

Yep. Play it slowly - as slowly as you need to to play it properly. Don't play along in time, to a metronome or the tune. in fact don't worry about timing at all until you have the notes and fingerings right. If you slow down on a difficult part that's fine, it's more important to practice it properly than to repeatedly play some parts incorrectly because it's too fast.

And enjoy the process of learning, don't worry about nailing the whole song, that will come naturally in time.

Also, it's mostly here, including a link to the original isolated bass track*:

I’ve got my bass out of it’s cupboard storage after a mere four years of non stop diy on a money pit house.

Leftfield choice … I’m learning Surrender by U2 - it has slap, harmonics and a good finger style groove also and is not over-challenging to my very out of practice fingers. Now I just need to recall how to count to 4 …

just out of shot to left, right and behind (mostly) is just some of the kid-detritus that I’ve yet to shift on eBay …

I've just started on Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back In Town. Singing and playing... this could take some time...

Funnily enough, just did that. Had to concentrate on learning it before singing as it is hard to do both. Great line though.

I found Jailbreak really hard to sing and play. Easy bass line but just those half beat notes catch me out.

Not really learning it, but I went along to a rehearsal expecting to play House of the Rising Sun in Am, and expecting it to be a bit meh, even with some neat guitar work.

But we did it in Em, no problem. And to my surprise and great satisfaction, it came out pretty much like this:

Currently playing root note stuff to retrain my ruptured tendon finger.

Its a bit boring!

Still if it gets me match fit again, it’s all good.

I got my ring finger tip crushed by an over zealous workmate. He said I wouldn't be going to the medic with that. I said there's no way I can hide it. Had to get the pad of my finger stitched. It was agony. Upshot is when I play guitar or bass and slide, I get pain in that finger. It's still tender a year later.
