Single user - multiple accounts

What's the thought's on a person having multiple accounts on a forum. Is it all harmless fun, a social experiment, a way to play devils advocate etc. or do folk have other views on the topic?

I can understand that the reasons to do so can be many and varied but I'm undecided on how I feel about it!

Having more than one account so you can express different views seems a bit underhand to me. You might find you're arguing with yourself. No wonder there are frequent threads about mental health!

Another forum gives a long ban for those who play with more than one account. For a reason, there are people behaving badly.

I'm struggling to see why anybody would.......unless they have multiple-personalities?

I am resisting the temptation to suspect something underhand....but maybe somebody can enlighten me with legitimate reasons.

I'm far too simplistic to even consider more than one account. I didn't realise this forum stuff was a game you could win by having a team to get your point across. I just say what I feel (within reason) and if people like it then all very well, and if they don't then never mind. One view I have repeated is my one on Internet arguing, "where no one wins and everyone looks like tw@ts", so why bother or worry about it.

Our IT team are tracking them down at this very moment. The highly trained BC stealth commando unit, have had Christmas leave cancelled and are on standby.

When I used to mod on another forum, alternative accounts were known as 'sock puppets' and got shut down, and the offending member warned.

I am really struggling to think of a good reason to have a second (or more) account on a forum. I really can't think of anything that doesn't suggest it is an underhand way to create trouble.
