Hi Joe there's loads out there on a budget to get you up and running Squier, Cort, Yamaha, Vintage all make good quality entry level basses and a small 10w practice combo Blackstar, Ampeg, ect will all do the biz for home practice best of luck and welcome aboard it's a great forum for help and advice.

Welcome Joe.

As you can see, you've come to the right place for advice.  Fortunately, affordable instruments made these days tend to play well.  You should easily be able to make a good sound without busting the bank.  Of course after you buy your first there will come a time when you want to get another.  This phenomenon is known as GAS...

As everyone knows, the ideal number of basses for anyone can be determined by a simple equation-

Perfect number = the number you already own +1
